Paws and Pints breaks ground in Des Moines; opening planned for 2022

If anyone is coming out of the pandemic happier than they went in, it’s dogs. Many have spent over a year cuddled up to their remote-working owners, and shelters and breeders around the country often couldn’t keep up with the demand as a growing number of people found comfort in furry companionship. The Des Moines cohort of pandemic puppies has another treat to look forward to in 2022: The opening of Paws and Pints, a one-stop shop that will provide a destination experience for dogs and owners alike. After delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Paws and Pints broke ground on May 20 at 6218 Willowmere Drive. The 4.5-acre location near the intersection of Southwest 63rd Street and Park Avenue and just south of Water Works Park will house the 33,000-square-foot ultimate canine retreat.

Published on (Photo Courtesy of UAlbany Athletics) The UAlbany Great Danes are headed back to the America East title game for the first time since 2018 after taking down the UMBC Retrievers 14-12. While the Danes rolled early and took a commanding 7-1 lead late in the first quarter, the top-seeded Retrievers weren’t going down that easy. UMBC went on a 6-1 run from the 1:04 mark in the first through the 2:42 mark in the third to cut the Albany lead to 8-7. Albany veered back on course and used a three-goal run of their own to pull ahead 11-7 with 46 seconds left in the third. However, UMBC was able to use a four-goal run to tie things up at 11 with 9:52 remaining in regulation. Albany’s Kyle Casey and UMBC’s Brandon Galloway traded goals midway through the fourth before two straight from Corey Yunker and Ron John put this one away and sealed the win for the Danes.

Head coach Scott Marr has even taken it down to the granular level of pre-game music, telling his players to shed the earbuds and headphones to get more in tune with their teammates. He got what he wanted on Thursday, and also what the Great Danes needed at the end, as UAlbany scored two goals in the final 2:27 to beat UMBC 14-12 in the semifinals of the America East tournament in Catonsville, Maryland.
