Share Via Email   |  A+A A- By PTI NEW DELHI: Protesting farmer leaders on Wednesday reiterated that a complete repeal of three farm laws and legal guarantee on MSP are their main demands, after the government said it was ready to resume talks and asked them to point out their objections to the provisions of legislation.

“Our stand remains the same. Repeal the three laws, give us a written guarantee on MSP, if the government is ready to talk on this, then we are ready. Now, it is up to the government to decide about the meeting,” said farmer leader Shiv Kumar Kakka. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Wednesday said the government is ready to resume talks with protesting farmers but asked the unions to point out their objections to the provisions of the three farm laws with sound logic. Kakka, however, pointed out that the problems with laws had already been pointed out in the 11 rounds of talks that had happened between the government and the farmers.

NEW DELHI: Seeking to end speculation over forming a nine-member committee of farmer representatives to hold talks with the Centre, their umbrella outfit, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), on Tuesday said there was no such committee and there was no any communication from the government side to hold the fresh discussions on their key demands including repeal of three central farm laws and legal guarantee to purchase at minimum support price (MSP). The Morcha also insisted on its plan to send a team of farmer leaders to poll-bound states including West Bengal and Assam for appealing voters not to vote for the BJP in the Assembly polls. This programme will begin in West Bengal on March 12. There will be ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ (farmers’ meeting) in Kolkata on March 12 and March 13, in Nandigram on March 13 and in Singur and Asansol on March 14.

They, however, objected to Prime Minister Modi s remarks in Rajya Sabha that a new breed of agitators called andolan jivi has emerged in the country, and said that agitation has an important role in a democracy. Farmer leader Shiv Kumar Kakka, who is a senior member of the Samkyukta Kisan Morcha which is spearheading the ongoing stir, said they are ready for the next round of talks and the government should tell them the date and time of the meeting.
