The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in July last year requested the TRAI to provide its considered inputs under Section 11 of the TRAI Act, 1997 for formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy.
Before working in the Railway Board, Lahoti served under various capacities in Northern, Central, North Central, Western and West Central Railways. He has served in the Indian Railways for 36 long years.
It further said phone tapping does not fall under the affairs of telecom service providers and the information sought also does not relate to the functions of the TRAI under the law.
Back in September 2020, Trai had recommended a light-touch regulatory framework for cloud services via setting up of an industry body through a three-step process. It had suggested that this industry body be registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and be formed using an approach akin to one used for formation of the M2M body by DoT.
The current TRAI chairperson, P D Vaghela, is a Gujarat-cadre 1986-batch IAS officer, and was earlier Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals. His predecessor, R S Sharma, a Jharkhand-cadre 1978-batch IAS officer, was the IT Secretary from 2014 to 2015.
