State renews push to review key power deals to cut costs

(File, Standard) The government is in yet another attempt to review the contracts that power producers have signed with Kenya Power as it tries to tame the high cost of electricity. The Energy ministry yesterday set up a team that will review all the existing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) that the power utility firm KPLC signed with independent power producers. One of the key tasks for the committee is to talk to power producers and renegotiate the PPAs. The PPAs contain details on how much the generators are paid by Kenya Power for the electricity sold to the firm.

Barely do weeks lapse without a company applying for a licence to generate its power using solar. The firms then sell the excess electricity to Kenya Power. The latest firm seeking to lower power bills is the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), which plans to install solar power generators in its 29 factories. The move is expected to help tea factories cut nearly 50 per cent of their power bills.

[David Gichuru, Standard] Kenya Power’s profit after tax for the first six months trading period ended December 31, 2020 fell by 80 per cent, hurt by the coronavirus pandemic. The power distributor said yesterday its net profit fell to Sh138 million for six months from Sh692 million in the same period of 2019. It blamed the loss on the effects of Covid-19 restrictions last year that depressed its sales. Revenue from contracted customers fell marginally to Sh69 billion last year from Sh69.6 billion in the same period of the previous year.

CPSO: 15-year-old dies after stabbing at Lake Charles Walmart KATC and last updated 2021-01-23 23:21:20-05 The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff s Office is responding to a homicide at a Walmart in Lake Charles Saturday night. At 7:30 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the grocery store on Highway 14 in reference to a stabbing. The initial investigation revealed there was a fight between several young girls inside the store, at which time a 15-year-old was stabbed. The victim was later pronounced dead. A 13-year-old suspect has been located by deputies in connection with the incident and is in custody. Next of kin has not been notified so the victim’s name has not been released.
