KOLKATA: At a protest meet held in Esplanade on Monday, questions were raised about how a journalist close to the BJP-government at the Centre could share classified information involving national security and even flaunt how the martyrdom of jawans will be used for political gains.
Celebrities from all spheres of life, including Goutam Ghose, Subhaprasanna, Joy Goswami, Nirbed Roy, Pratul Mukhopadhyay, Raj Chakrabarty, Nusrat Jahan, Debleena Dutt Mukherjee, Saayoni Ghosh, Leena Gangopadhyay, Haranath Chakraborty, Tathagata Mukherjee, Sudeshna Roy, Kaushik Sen, Tanushree Chakraborty, Soumitra Ray, Sohini Sengupta, Paroma Banerjee, Lagnajita Chakraborty, Shankar Chakrabarty, Kanchan Mallick, Joyjeet Banerjee, Premendu Bikash Chaki, Suchismita Dasgupta, Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee and Riddhi Sen protested the rise of “fascist, power-hungry, misogynist forces in Bengal”.
Calcutta High Court
KOLKATA: Only the widow has the right over a dead man’s sperm, the Calcutta High Court has ruled, turning down an appeal by a father to be given his only son’s sperm preserved in a Delhi sperm bank.
The father had moved the high court in March 2020, saying their daughter-in-law had not only refused to give them the nod to get the sperm, but also refused to acknowledge their pleas. The father feared that if the sperm was destroyed, or unused, during the period of agreement with the hospital sperm bank, “they are going to lose their clan”.

JALPAIGURI: Fourteen people were feared dead and several others were injured when a boulder-laden truck overturned and fell on three small vehicles near Jaldhaka Bridge at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri late on Tuesday.
Sources said the truck lost control, hit several vehicles and overturned on the three vehicles, in which the victims were travelling. Police and rescue teams reached the spot. Police suspected several more people could be seriously injured.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
KOLKATA: The CBI on Monday questioned senior IPS officer Tathagata Basu in connection with the illegal coal trading case the agency is investigating. Basu, who was the SP Hooghly earlier, was asked if he was privy to such rackets operating in the state.
Basu, now a deputy commissioner at Chandannagar Police Commissionerate, arrived at the Nizam Palace office of the agency at 10.30 am. He was questioned till 5 pm as officers tried to put together the missing pieces.
CBI officials had earlier alleged that Anup Maji alias Lala had been running the coal mining racket through the Asansol-Durgapur-Hooghly area.
