Recently in New Denver, the Kohan Reflection Garden marked its 30th anniversary. Built to commemorate the Japanese Canadians interned in the area during the Second World War, the garden, a labour of love in the community, has hosted dance, music, theatre, poetry readings, book signings, martial arts, yoga and art classes. Year-round, people in the Columbia Basin get together outside to enjoy themselves and connect with each other. Eight communities, including New Denver, Johnson's Landing and Rossland, are now undertaking nine projects to make public spaces even more inviting and useable with support from nearly $1.43 million from Columbia Basin Trust’s Community Outdoor Revitalization Grants.
