Waiheke marina: Occupiers set up floating camp, one apparently kicked in the face

Abigail Dougherty/Stuff Protectors in life jackets huddle on the pontoon, which they have been occupying since Wednesday. The developer, Kennedy Point Marina, said it was investigating the incidents that unfolded on Wednesday. It said the videos showed only a “small segment of a confrontation” between protesters and security personnel. Marina director Kitt Littlejohn said there had been “significant offending” aimed at the company’s property and staff “in what has become an unnecessarily confrontational situation”. The occupiers are part of Protect Pūtiki, a Ngāti Pāoa-led group protesting the planned 180-berth marina. Spokeswoman Emily Māia Weiss (Ngāti Pāoa) said the protectors had no plans to leave the pontoon.

Photo: Rose Davis Footage from the site on Waiheke Island today also showed what appeared to be a scuffle between occupiers and people in hard hats and high-vis jackets. It comes after a previous incident filmed last week, where workers were seen ramming a boat into protesters who were sandwiched between large black buoys surrounding the construction zone, which left one with neck, chest and wrist injuries. Both incidents were livestreamed on Facebook. Protect Pūtiki occupation spokesperson Emily Weiss said the force used by Warden Consulting security guards on behalf of the developers had been scary.
