Nature: Spring is such an exciting time for wildlife  - Mount Desert Islander

Of all the mammals on Mount Desert Island, I think otters are the most playful.

Nature: Mockingbird s trill doesn t thrill city girl  - Mount Desert Islander

Nature: Mockingbird’s trill doesn’t thrill city girl  In 1972, when our family moved to Mount Desert Island,  mockingbirds were only summer visitors. Then, as years went by, more and more of these birds were seen, even in the winter. It soon became a common sight to see them in the snow and feeding on numerous berries still found on local vegetation. In the last 10 years or so, I have been getting fewer and fewer reports. In some years, I get none about this bird. I have wondered about this.  Here in South Carolina where I am for few weeks this winter, mockingbirds are a familiar sight and they are regular nesters. They fly about and land with a flourish and are quite vocal. Along the beach and through the vegetation where the park paths lead you behind the beaches, they are very noticeable and easy to see. These lovely birds often sing in the night and they have quite a long repertoire of songs. When I was writing a nature column for the Norwalk Hour man

Nature: Owls fill the world with love songs - Mount Desert Islander

Nature: Owls fill the world with love songs Listen for  great horned owls hooting in February. These large owls are getting ready to nest no matter if it is snowing or fair weather. During this owl’s courtship, you may hear some strange calls and the bird acts in a foolish manner to impress his chosen one. Sometimes he flaps his wings, bows his head and ‘sings’ his love song. The female often has to sit on the nest incubating the eggs under a blanket of snow.  Redpolls, too, are birds to look for this month. They are not very big and yet they have a subtle beauty that makes a day special as they feed at your window feeder. They may come to this area from October until mid–April. Some years they may appear in large numbers. Other years you may not see any. They seem to move about always in unison as if they are one bird. It is fun to see them dangling from a branch as they feed; their reddish cap attracts your attention. If you disturb them, they will fly off to

$8 6M Trenton solar project planned - The Ellsworth American

$8.6M Trenton solar project planned TRENTON Planning Board members on Jan. 20 unanimously approved an application for a solar generation facility, the town’s first large-scale solar project. “We’re open for business,” board Chairman John Whetstone told The American regarding members’ readiness to approve solar projects. “We’re very much in favor of [solar],” he said, adding that the board would like commercial businesses in the area to pursue getting energy credits to save on their electricity bills.  The Trenton Solar Project was presented by Stephen Salsbury, president of Herrick & Salsbury Inc., a land surveying and land use consulting company in Ellsworth. He presented on behalf of clients Renewable Energy Development Partners, LLC (REDP), a Massachusetts-based firm.
