NEW DELHI: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi accused PM Narendra Modi of trying to tire out protesting farmers, asserting that the BJP government would have to withdraw the three controversial farm laws as Congress led a nationwide protest, billed ‘Kisan Adhikar Divas’, against the agri laws and price rise on Friday.
Joined by party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Punjab Congress MPs at Jantar Mantar, where they have been on a dharna for many days, Rahul alleged that the PM was benefitting a handful of crony capitalists while trying to rob farmers. He said the PM had earlier tried to annul the land acquisition law but had to back out in the face of agitation by Congress and farmers, and he would meet the same fate again.
The state unit of the Congress observed Kisan Adhikar Divas in Ranchi on Friday to express its solidarity with the farmers who had been agitating for withdrawal of the three new farm laws.
Over 5,000 party workers from across the state gathered at Morabadi grounds where they held a meeting before marching towards Raj Bhavan, about 2 km away.
Before the meeting began, they also observed two minutes silence in memory of those farmers who died during their agitation.
“The Union government must take back these three farm laws as those will break the backbone of the farmers,” R.P.N. Singh, in-charge of the party’s state unit, said while addressing the meeting, adding the Congress took pro-farmers stand whenever it was in power at the Centre.
Asking people to join the farmers' "satyagraha" against the Modi government, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday spoke out in support of the ongoing protests and against rising fuel prices in the country.
The Congress is taking out protest marches at all state capitals in the country and will gherao Raj Bhawans. The party is also protesting against fuel price hike. The Congress is observing the day as Kisan Adhikar Divas in support of farmers rights.
