Recent developments leave no doubt that with the exercise of naked power, the government is attempting to suborn the independence of the judiciary, a basic feature of the constitution and one of the pillars of democracy.
A bench of the top court suggested that the government is perhaps holding back some appointments because it is "not happy" that the top court struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission.
"The basic fault with the present collegium system is that the judges are recommending those colleagues whom they know. Obviously, they would not recommend a judge they do not know," the law minister said.
