HYDERABAD: A study by a group of researchers associated with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the national public health agency of the United States, has found that chances of deaths have reduced by 87 per cent if people wear medical masks. It also said wearing double masks is a better option to counter the UK variant of Covid-19.
The study, which was conducted for about six months in the US, said that by wearing a cloth mask, the death rate had reduced by 82 per cent. The medical masks also helped in reducing the cumulative infection by 78 per cent and by 69 per cent if people wore cloth masks.
HYDERABAD: Nearly 40 per cent of all critical Covid-19 patients in various intensive care units (ICU) across city hospitals are obese and doctors treating such patients across Telangana have said the high risk of severe Covid disease associated with obesity is also reflecting in the number of deaths.
According to the recent National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) report, Hyderabad city alone has 48.7 per cent women and 33.1 per cent men under the overweight category, way higher than the numbers in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, or Chennai. Across Telangana, 28 per cent of women and 24 per cent of men are overweight or obese.
“In ICU wards at least 40 per cent of patients fall in the category of obese or have other co-morbidities along with obesity” said a top resident doctor at Gandhi Hospital. At Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, one of the designated hospitals for Covid-19, handling mild to moderate cases, numbers are slightly lower.

HYDERABAD: A study conducted by the Nizamabad district authorities has indicated that Covid-19 patients who have taken two doses of vaccine may not face any adverse condition forcing their admission in hospitals.
They also did not suffer from any serious lung infection after taking the two jabs. The study was conducted by Nizamabad Government General Hospital (GGH) radiology department. The department took 10 patients who did not take the shot and 10 patients who got vaccinated for its study and conducted all the tests, including CT scan of the chest.
“The results were encouraging. Those who had taken their vaccine doses did not have any chest infection. Only one person had a mild infection but he did not require hospitalisation. Whereas, among the patients who did not take the jab, 80 per cent of them had chest infection and needed hospitalisation,” Dr Kiran Madala of GGH said.
