A new order from President Joe Biden banning federal immigration agencies from using terms such as “illegal alien” is a step in the right direction, say some immigration activists in the Upper Valley.
But others argue that an order dictating language does not do enough to promote the rights of undocumented people.

Norwich asked to go slow on chief

NORWICH Some Norwich residents are urging the town to delay hiring a new police chief and take time to reconsider the role of policing in the community following the departure of Chief Jennifer Frank last month.
“The Town of Norwich has not engaged in a deliberate and community-led assessment of its public safety needs in over two decades,” a group of six residents and attorney Kira Kelley wrote in a proposed resolution to the Selectboard last week. “We believe that the Selectboard and Town Manager must provide a plan for community-led engagement on issues of public safety before a new Chief and Department Head is hired.”

“The speed of bureaucracy is not going to cut it,” said Dana Dwinell-Yardley, who argued that New England’s electric ratepayers have too little recourse for the fact that they subsidize the coal plant through its commitments to provide future power to the regional grid.
The next auction of those commitments will be held in early February, an event that could decide whether the plant stays open for several more years. The protesters said the goal of their activism is the closure of the plant as soon as possible.
