Durban - He narrowly escaped death when his shop was set alight, allegedly by a mob from the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA), but Pakistani businessman Altaf Hussain is not giving up.
âIâm not going to run away. I will have to find ways to rebuild my business. I have nowhere to go,â he said after the incident on Monday.
Hussain has been running a cellphone and repair shop on Joe Slovo Street for the past two years.
Two other shops owned by foreign nationals were also torched and others were looted.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has commended the joint law enforcement operations for ensuring calm and stability in the Durban city centre amid threats of illegal protests.
According to a report, police were in the early hours of Tuesday morning alerted about a group of approximately 30 people, who were gathering at King Dinuzulu Park and plotting to stage an illegal march to the Durban City Hall.
Police successfully dismantled the group, as this is in violation of the Disaster Management Act and the COVID-19 level 3 regulations.
The acting MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Kwazi Mshengu, said it is disturbing that a few incidents, targeting shops owned by foreign nationals, were reported in the Durban city centre.

IT WAS business as usual for shop owners yesterday until people stormed shops belonging to foreigners.
The group looted shops in the Durban CBD and even set some on fire before fleeing the scene.
Shop owner Saqab Imram told Daily Sun just after 8am, between 30 and 40 people stormed his shop where he sells cellphones, clothes and TVs.
“My brother was alone. They hit him before stealing money and burning the shop. They stole about R40 000,” he said.
Callistus Amaeshi said he was at his shop when the group attacked.
“I went out and called the police but they didn’t assist me,” he said.
