With COVID-19 hospitalizations soaring past 5,000 statewide for the first time in nearly five months, state officials are stepping up vaccination outreach programs and promotional campaigns but Gov. Greg Abbott insists that the state won’t impose any new mandates on Texans.
State officials announced Wednesday that Texas has 5,292 people hospitalized with lab-confirmed COVID-19 the highest number since March 2, the day Abbott announced he was ending all state mask mandates and restrictions on businesses.

Starting June 4, Texas schools will no longer be allowed to require masks, per an executive order signed by Gov. Greg Abbott earlier this month.
Currently, public schools in Bexar County require students and staff to wear masks indoors, and some were planning to continue the mandate through the summer.

It would be nice to have a governor who wasn t so blatantly trying to promote himself politically with every move he makes. A leader who genuinely understands and cares about both sides of an issue would be refreshing. But obviously not realistic.
