A park over I-74 in Peoria is Kim Blickenstaff s latest proposal

PEORIA Kim Blickenstaff never has forgotten what construction of Interstate 74 did, in his opinion, to downtown Peoria and the North Valley. Now, the local developer believes he has a remedy that incorporates the interstate. Or the open space above it, more accurately. Blickenstaff envisions construction of platforms between vehicular overpasses that span much of the owntown segment of I-74 west of the Murray Baker Bridge. The stretch between Knoxville Avenue and the Illinois River lies below ground level. Atop those platforms above I-74 between Adams Street and Perry Avenue would be a public park. Green spaces and plazas could house outdoor concerts, fountains, trees, walking paths, food trucks and other things, according to Blickenstaff.

Peoria s Red, White and Boom fireworks display on July 4 postponed

PEORIA For the second consecutive year, Red, White and Boom is a bust, at least for the time being.  The annual fireworks display on Fourth of July night along the Illinois River between Peoria and East Peoria has been postponed, its primary organizer announced Tuesday morning. COVID-19 concerns were cited for the postponement, according to Mike Wild, vice president and general manager of Midwest Communications. “This is all about public health and safety,” Wild said in a statement. “Along with our partners, the Peoria Park District, as well as the cities of Peoria and East Peoria, we recognize the guidelines in place would not allow for an event of this size, regardless of how much we would love to move forward.

Peoria Heights Subway moving to Peoria to make way for Grayboy Lofts

PEORIA HEIGHTS  The village s Subway sandwich shop will move to Peoria to make way for a loft development by entrepreneur Kim Blickenstaff. Subway, 4410 N. Prospect Road in Peoria Heights, will relocate to the former Family Video at the corner of War Memorial Drive and Wisconsin Avenue in Peoria, said Subway owner Dave Hanna. He said the new Subway could be up and running in two weeks, but the pandemic triggered delays in equipment availability, possibly delaying his plans.  Hanna, who said Subway has been at the Prospect Road address for more than 30 years, declined to talk further about the relocation. In January, the Family Video chain announced it would shut down all of its stores, including those in Peoria.

Sankoty Lakes Resort in Spring Bay: Glamping delights first guests

too rough.  The couple sought to escape their suburban-Chicago home and expose their two teens to the great outdoors. They considered overnight camping, though a complete lack of experience prompted hesitation.  “We wanted to camp,” said a grinning Ben Desnoyers. “But we didn’t want to camp-camp.”  Kris Desnoyers had heard about “glamping”  an oxymoronic mashup of “glamorous” and “camping” which somewhat compromises wilderness for comfort. Think of a state park with resort services.  From the Desnoyers dwelling in Tinley Park, she searched the internet and found few glamping possibilities in Illinois. But she spotted just what they were looking for in Sankoty Lakes Resort and Retreat, still under transformation around a former gravel pit on the edge of Spring Bay. After a recent serene night under a full moon, the Desnoyers stepped out of one of the 20 canvas tents each decked out with modern amenities, to the tune of
