other equipment into the house. we spoke to a neighbor who says that he lived here for about two years. he was here off and on, he d be here a few days, then a few days off. said that he told his fiancee that he was a truck driver. the only thing odd, he said, this was a relatively normal guy, kept to himself, didn t see him much, would wave, didn t seem unfriendly or particularly friendly. the only thing that seemed odd is he watched tv at fairly loud volumes, because his neighbor could hear it, usually cable news or some news program, at very odd hours of the day or night. but seemed like he was a fairly normal guy and was just shocked to hear that this is the guy who is suspected of doing this. 17 days before mr. bowers quote ed, hiass is bringing in jews to
genocides, pogroms, the holocaust. many of us have encountered threats in our daily lives. this is nothing new. there is something different, though, brooke. what is that? we have leadership in this country that propagate conspiracy theories, conspiracy theorys about jews, refugees, migrants. that is what s different. the hatred that fills some people people s hearts which is inexplicable to you and me, that s not new. but when people hear from their leadership these conspiracy theories that spread false information, that s unfortunately having an impact and ending in brutal circumstances. that s the difference between before and today, and hearing the adl, jonathan, saying needing to hear leaders, needing to hear people at the top say, enough is enough. really call it out specifically, all this hate and this hate speech in this country. you took to twitter today.
these conspiracy theories, hate speech. no one took them down, no one said anything. my father is a holocaust survivor. he taught me, if you hear hate, even if it s not directed against you, speak up. if there s no one left to speak up, it s allowed to fester. so many people could have said something about this man, whether it s digital platforms or people he interacted with, and somehow no one did and we ended up with a massacre today. you said your father survived the holocaust. i want that to sink in for people watching. your father survived the holocaust, this is personal for you? it s personal for me, for my father, for jews around the country. i ve also heard from so many people from different religions today and i would say, if this attack happened at a mosque or church or any other place of worship, this is an attack against people based upon their faith. the jewish people are no stranger to violence. it has plagued us since the beginning of time.
states. what is going on? well, brooke, it s a sad thing to say, but it s true. that anti-semitism is like the canary in the mine shaft for our country. how do you mean? when we are heading or we are in moments of a lot of late and intolerant, you see a spike in anti-schmidtic behavior. the america first movement in the 1930s had a deep undercurrent of anti-semitism. the reason that america did not bring and allow more jewish refugees into this country was that many of the isolationists did not like jews. charles lindbergh. the great charles lindbergh who flew across the atlantic solo without stopping was the symbol of the america first movement, and he spiced his speeches and arguing against involvement in the european war with attacks on jews. in the mccarthy period there was
jews, against refugees, against latinos, against any group that some might see as the other. what do you think it s growing? last question. it s growing around the world. and there s a rise in nativism. there s a real fear of the other. and i think we ve been too nice in allowing people to get away with hateful statements. we can t anymore. and i have to say that today, when there was during president trump s remarks, he repeatedly invoked anti-semitism. anti-semitism was the motivation for this killing. but this killer equated jews with welcoming refugees. this is about fighting all hate, fighting hate against refugees, against jews, against anybody who is seen as being the other. mark hetfield, president and ceo of hais, thank you so much. thank you. today s deadly mass shooting
