KILLEEN, TX â Teachers change the lives of millions of students every day. Their impact reaching beyond the classroom and after a year like 2020, this National Teachers Appreciation Week means more than before.
Throughout the week-long celebration, we will be highlighting teachers across Central Texas. Today s winner from Killeen ISD is Angela Thomas a teacher at Trimmer Elementary.
4400 Success Dr. is where you can find Trimmer Elementary. Itâs also where Angela Thomas has been for the past 18 years. Today, she got a surprise she wasnât quite expecting.

Newly elected Place 6 board member Cullen Mills, 37, of Killeen, will effectively replace retired longtime board member Minerva Trujillo, after he solidified his win Saturday night. Mills beat opponent Riakos âRockâ Adams by 425 votes.
Mills, a 2002 Harker Heights High School graduate, is the husband of KISD employee, parent educator, Erin Mills, and owner of family business Modern Appliance in Killeen. Mills graduated from University of North Texas with a degree in business administration. Mills will join the other six board members at the upcoming May 11th board meeting.
A total of 2,018 voters cast their ballots in favor of Mills, while 1,593 voted for his opponent Riakos Adams.
Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday announced the release of $11.2 billion in federal funds intended to help public schools address the learning loss and unanticipated costs associated with the coronavirus pandemic.
Killeen ISD is slated to receive $86.3 million in federal stimulus funds, while Copperas Cove ISD will be allocated $9.9 million, according to the Texas Education Agency.
The funding is part of President Joe Bidenâs $1.9 trillion COVID-19 economic relief package signed into law on March 11.
For weeks, Texas educators and lawmakers have been calling on state leaders to release the funds to Texasâ ailing public schools.
Now that the funds have been officially released, school districts may apply for a portion of the federal funds through the Texas Education Agency.
The family of Leon Garcia is asking the community for help following the accidental death of their son on Wednesday.
Wednesday, 24-year-old Leon Garcia, a lifelong Killeen resident and a 2014 Shoemaker High School graduate, suffered a head injury and died after exiting his motherâs vehicle while she was driving him to a driverâs license appointment.
He was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke at 1:46 p.m.
âI know he meant to not kill himself,â Sandra Garcia told the Herald Wednesday. âHe probably thought he was going to roll like those stunt people on TV, but it doesnât work that way. This is a lesson for people â jumping out of a car doesnât always end up with a few scrapes and bruises.â
