KISD has recorded over 1,500 total COVID-19 cases, with 24 cases active

There have been 1,596 positive cases of the coronavirus among both students and staff within the Killeen Independent School District since March as of Friday. At the elementary level, 316 students and 409 staff have tested positive. At KISD middle schools, 198 students and 138 staff have tested positive, and 263 students and 148 staff have tested positive at high schools, according to the district’s COVID-19 dashboard, https://www.killeenisd.org/dashboard. A total of 124 staff members have tested positive at KISD’s non-campus buildings. At least two teachers have died from complications with the virus. There were 24 active cases of the virus — 17 students and 7 staff members — in the district as of Friday, according to KISD. Maxdale and Skipcha Elementary schools have the highest number of active cases in the district currently. KISD hourly employees address lack of rights

Five individuals spoke Tuesday evening to the Killeen Independent School District board of trustees about the lack of due process rights for district educational support professionals. Killeen Educators Association president Rick Beaulé spoke during public forum citing the names of 10 Texas school districts, including Austin ISD and Fort Worth ISD, that already have adopted due process rights for their lowest-paid employees. “The law of the land in these districts gives these Education Support Professionals, or ESP’s, a guaranteed review of disciplinary issues prior to dismissal, rather than the fear of being terminated for little or no reason,” Beaulé said.

Utah companies donate to Killeen residents post-storm

Thanks to the efforts of a local Army spouse, along with several companies, some residents of Killeen will receive donations of food and water following the recent weather system. Dominique Owen, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, coordinated the delivery of a trailer full of donations — 32 pallets worth — which arrived at the Killeen Independent School District Warehouse on Thursday afternoon. Half of the trailer truck was filled with food and hygiene product donations, courtesy of Associated Foods, and the other half was full of palates of donated water, courtesy of Salt Lake City-based Back In Black Trucking, which Owen’s father, Dick Simon Jr., is the owner.
