Hitters streaks of homering in consecutive games By JohnW53 on May 8, 2021, 4:48am CDT +
Only the Yankees (16,350) and Giants (14,804) have hit more.
The Cubs have hit at least 1 homer in as many as
17 consecutive games. They have homered in at least
10 straight games
5 games in a row.
Intriguingly, neither have the Braves, who had hit the fourth most total homers, 14,047.
Nor have the Dodgers, Phillies or Reds. That makes 5 of the 8 National League teams that existed before 1962. The record for all 5 teams is 5.
.
On the other hand, the Padres had a streak of 6 by Graig Nettles in 1984.
Morgan Ensberg homered in 6 straight games for the Astros in 2006, when they still were in the NL.
Previous anniversaries of Cubs first league game By JohnW53 on May 7, 2021, 4:43am CDT +
The Cubs are scheduled to host the Pirates today, May 7 the
150th anniversary of their first league game, also played at home: their National Association debut, a victory over the Cleveland Forest Citys.
After 3 innings at the Union Grounds, the White Stockings, as they were known then, led, 14-1. But they barely hung on to win, 14-12.
I described that game in detail in a previous post.
Then I wondered how the Cubs had fared on other significant anniversaries of that historic win.
Here is what I found:
Cubs 1-0 games featuring bases-loaded walks By JohnW53 on Apr 28, 2021, 6:34am CDT +
Until the their bullpen imploded in the ninth inning on Sunday, the Cubs were on the verge of an incredibly rare defeat: 1-0, with the run scoring on a bases-loaded walk.
During the game, I determined that the last time the Cubs suffered such a loss was April 24, 1974, at Cincinnati.
That game was scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when Bill Bonham surrendered a leadoff double to Dave Concepcion.
After an intentional walk, Bonham fielded a bunt and threw to third for a forceout, then got Pete Rose to pop up.

Brady Singer played in the SEC for three seasons before being drafted by the Kansas City Royals, so he faced a ton of talented hitters prior to starting his professional career. Pitching for the University of Florida from 2016-2018, Singer matched up against the likes of JJ Bleday, Nick Senzel, Bryan Reynolds, and Evan White. Easy marks were few and far between.
Which of his collegiate opponents does Singer recall respecting the most? More specifically, which hitter had him laser-focused on making quality pitches, lest an errant offering result in serious damage?
“One that really stands out wasn’t in the SEC, but rather in Omaha,” Singer told me. “I believe it was the first game I pitched there, in 2017 when we went on to win the [College] World Series. It was Brendan McKay, from Louisville. When he got in the box, I knew I had to dial in. Just the bat path he had, and how he stood in the box how he presented himself was tough.”
