When someone asks “Why is this jeanswearing/English speaking/ welldressed/rich-looking person protesting as and with the farmers”, they are telling you two things. First, that they have a certain caricature of a farmer in their mind. Second, they believe a person will only stand up if his personal interest is affected. Empathy, compassion, solidarity, fraternity are ruled out.
These people would have been surprised by the Sikhs distributing food during the anti-CAA-NRC-NPR protests last year. I walked up to many of them and asked if they knew that the laws will not affect them personally. When all of them said yes, they knew, I asked them why they were still there. I got a variety of answers. One: our gurus have told us that every mazloom (vulnerable person) is a Sikh. The more common answer was that they will not let the country experience partition again.
