Belize Mayors’ Association Holds Final Meeting for 2018-2021 Cohort of Mayors
The Belize Mayors’ Association members wrapped up their terms in office with a final meeting on Friday in Belmopan. The Ministry of Local Government recognized those mayors who are not contesting the upcoming elections. These include former mayor Kevin Bernard, now member of the National Assembly and Minister of Youth, Sports and E-Governance, who has served as mayor of Orange Walk Town since 2012. Others who were given awards for their service include Mayor Khalid Belisle of the Belmopan City Council, Mayor Daniel Guerrero of the San Pedro Town Council, Mayor Ashton Mckenzie of Punta Gorda Town and Mayor Marconi Sosa from Benque Viejo. Minister Bernard thanked the mayors on behalf of Minister of Local Government Oscar Requeña, who supports critical municipal development initiatives that have been on the table for the last few years. Jacklyn Burns
In the Capital, sitting deputy mayor Jacklyn Burns is now leading the U.D.P. slate into the municipal elections. Mayor Khalid Belisle announced earlier on that he was not re-contesting his seat and Burns took up the challenge. Going head-to-head against a friend and fellow educator, Burns was asked about her confidence going into the elections.

“We are pretty optimistic; we’ve been putting in the work, we’ve been house-to-house on the campaign trail. We’ve covered just about almost all of central Belmopan and we have some areas in the periphery that we still have to walk, but we are jamming every day and we go up to curfew time in some instances.”

The United Democratic Party has named the three senators which will fill the positions that are allotted to the opposition in the Senate. During a virtual press conference held on Wednesday December 9, UDP Party Leader, Hon. Patrick Faber announced that, all attorneys, Michael Peyrefitte, Aldo Salazar and Sheena Pitts will take up the positions of Senators.
While these persons will now represent the UDP in the Senate, Hon. Faber explained that in the case of Salazar, he will only be temporarily holding the position until Belmopan Mayor, Khalid Belisle’s tenure in that office comes to an end in March. At that time municipal elections will be due and, not seeking the office again, Belisle will take up the position of senator.
