The former president of zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has died, at the age of 95. Mugabe was at the centre of his countrys struggle for independence from britain and became its first Prime Minister in 1980, before becoming president seven years later. His reputation as a hero of the Independence Movement was soon overshadowed by the brutality of his rule. In the early 1980s, thousands of people were massacred and tortured in matabeleland, and the suppression of human rights became a defining feature of his time in power.
