As a man opens fire killing four people including two children. Informers will be shot, say signs in londonderry. Three months afterjournalist leera mckey was killed no one has been charged with her murder. And, up to his neck in water the dramatic resuce of a father who became trapped in the rocks on a norfolk beach. Borisjohnson has said he is very confident a new brexit deal can be reached with the eu. Speaking on his first trip to scotland as Prime Minister where leaving without an agreement is widely opposed mrjohnson said theresa mays Withdrawal Agreement was dead. But he insisted there was scope for a new plan, provided there was goodwill and common sense. After their meeting, first minister Nicola Sturgeon said she believed he was pursuing a dangerous path to no deal. Our scotland editor sarah smith reports. For Boris Johnson, coming here to the Scottish First minister official residence in edinburgh days after becoming Prime Minister is a capitally choreographed piece of diplomacy. It was universally popular. But borisjohnson meeting Nicola Sturgeon face to face will not help them to see eye to eye over brexit. Visiting a Vanguard Class Nuclear submarine on the clyde, borisjohnson wants the eu to know that he is ready for a battle. Despite supercharging no deal preparations, he is also saying he will go the extra mile to try to get the deal. It is absolutely right that we should go for a deal, and there is every chance that we can get a deal, and i think with goodwill and common sense, that is what we will achieve. Are the odds are still a million to one that we will. 7 provided there is common sense and goodwill on the part of our partners that is exactly where i would put it. Might matter any chance of a new deal brexit even any chance would not satisfy her, she says is catastrophic and should not be considered. This government and the path that it is pursuing i think is dangerous. It became clear to me that this government and the new Prime Minister has set the uk on an almost inevitable path to a no deal brexit, the position that it has taken, it makes it difficult to see how any deal could be struck with the eu and i think that would be catastrophic for scotland and the whole of the uk. The scottish tory leader and mrjohnson clashed over brexit three years ago and they still do not agree. She says she will not support no deal. They met again today. I said i wanted to see the same level of energy and vigour that is going into no deal planning going into trying to get a deal, i want to see the sort of shuttle diplomacy that is going to be required if we are going to see changes that can be brought back to the commons and i received the assurances that i was looking for. Borisjohnson has some fans in scotland. The snp are also delighted that he is now Prime Minister, convinced that he will inevitably increase the appetite for scottish independence. Sarah smith, bbc news, edinburgh. Our Political CorrespondentJonathan Blake joins us now from westminster. Basically borisjohnson basically Boris Johnson is basically borisjohnson is saying to the eu, lets do a new deal, we want to solve this and take the backstop out and do business, but he is also saying if he did not go that, i will walk away. The uk will lead at the end of october, nay. That is really concerning lots of people in scotla nd concerning lots of people in scotland not least at Nicola Sturgeon who lives in that building behind me. Her argument sturgeon who lives in that building behind me. Herargument this afternoon was she now thinks he is taking the uk almost inevitably on a quest to know deal because the eu would renegotiate and he said that ha rd would renegotiate and he said that hard deadline on the 31st of october. Now, you may say shes his political opponents that she will say that fairpoint but its interesting as well, there is a real concern in the Scottish Conservative Party and about mrjohnsons strategy. That tory scottish leader has made it clear she will not support him if he goes down that route meaning she could become one of those operatories shouting from the sidelines that we dont want to see the government take that policy on in see the government take that policy onina see the government take that policy on in a few weeks time. More conciliatory after that same they both agree on getting a new deal and something over that line and get it there pollen by how many times have we heard that line and get it through parliament by how many times have we heard back is not easier said than done. Meanwhile, the car maker vauxhall has warned of the impact brexit could have on around a thousand jobs at its Ellesmere Port factory in cheshire. The french owned Car Company Says it could move production out of the uk if brexit makes its business there unprofitable. The trade union, unite, accused the government of playing no Deal Roulette with the livelihoods of vauxhall workers. Our Business CorrespondentColletta Smith is there and sent this update. It was just four weeks ago they said they want to build it here but there is a . Hanging over that announcement because it was contingent on what every deal the uk government manages to secure. Today, we had had more flash on the implications of what that will actually mean. The plant at the moment is closed for two weeks for the planned annual summer shutdown, but this is not good news for the 1000 workers to come back to. Vauxhall, like much of the car industry have been warning about the implications of a no deal brexit for some time. But todays comments are the hardest punch yet. The boss says theyve a Southern European plant in mind to build the next generation of astra, if a no deal makes building them here at Ellesmere Port unprofitable. A load of preparation has already been done, but we are going to be stepping up that, reaching out to those sectors and businesses indeed that do feel vulnerable and will be more affected. Lets remember, the car sector has been affected by a range of other issues including the diesel situation and demand in china. The industry is certainly under pressure. Honda is closing its swindon site, ford are to close their bridgend plant and nissan are opting for more japanese production lines. Car manufacturing is a competitive business, there is always a fight for the next contract and everyone here on the wirral knows just how much is at stake. Its the kids and that, that i feel for because they are our next generation and if there is nothing here for us, then whats here for them . I think they are just going to use brexit as an excuse to close it. Its already going to close. That seems to be the opinion of a lot of people round here. Theres families involved, i would imagine itll have a big impact. It seems a shame that it should have to go. Its not only Ellesmere Port, you have the nissan factory, thats going to go. So where are we going to be . It is a worrying time. Jon has been an employee here all his working life. The lunacy of no brexit is a problem. If there no deal, on tariffs etc, but we stand ready. We stand ready as a union to make sure we do everything we can to maintain volume car production at this plan. It would be a huge blow to the community. The local mp says it feels like the government isnt on the side of the uk workforce. This comes off the back of the new Prime Minister appointing a very right wing cabinet, who are hell bent on leaving the eu without a deal. On the 31st of october it is a very clear warning to them that thats going to have dramatic consequences for this area. Around 80 of the finished astros are shipped from here across the sea to europe. And that makes this merseyside workforce more vulnerable than most. Colletta smith, bbc news, at Ellesmere Port. Professor Karel Williams is an automotive expert from Alliance ManchesterBusiness School and joins me now. Thank you forjoining us, how are jobs going to be affected if there isa jobs going to be affected if there is a no deal brexit then can we put a reliable figure on it . We cannot put an exact figure on it, but we do know that although people talk about an industry, its really an Assembly Plant we had in the uk. 55 of the components are imported and generally, notjust components are imported and generally, not just simply at that area, 80 of output is exported mainly to the eu. Therefore, any move outside the Single Market and the Customs Union is disruptive to just in time and if we have wto rules, thats10 just in time and if we have wto rules, thats 10 tariff on cars and 4. 5 components. Rules, thats 10 tariff on cars and 4. 596 components. Is there a big difference between a no deal brexit and have brexit with adl and that standstill a transition period in terms of number of jobs standstill a transition period in terms of number ofjobs not only directly by companies but knock on linkjobs that could be affected . Yes, i think there is a substantial difference in this case. I think its clear the industry very much needs a Frictionless Movement of components into the country and finished cars out of the country. If you lose that with a no deal brexit, then i think you would start to lose jobs and assembly factories and then you will lose that of the component factories, and that i think is probably a bigger issue because the really big issue is a piece start to lose volume and assemblies, models going elsewhere in factories closed, then the volume based component gets to be much smaller. Those in favour of a no deal brexit could say youre being pessimistic, we saw one person in the report saying the plant will closed and that using a brexit excuse. Well, the plant is in a difficult situation, and brexit is not the only problem that the industry faces. The case of the astro plant, then what we had is a plant which has run on a single shift and is only employing 1000 workers, but i think its fair to say it stands a good chance of getting the next model in 2020, if there isnt friction in the trade across the channel. If there isnt friction, i dont think its garrett fear mongering to say it simply a fa ct fear mongering to say it simply a fact that they will have to think about where he relocates. The Assembly Line is likely to be inside southern or eastern europe. When people like borisjohnson or dominic rob talk about some short term problems, if there is a no deal brexit, are we talking about an industry of jobs thatll brexit, are we talking about an industry ofjobs thatll be hit short term and recover or is there impact that long term . Short term and recover or is there impact that long term . short term and recover or is there impact that longterm . I think keeping is what models are switched, which factories closed and what the implications are for the volume base of components in the uk because broadly speaking, you would expect to have onejob broadly speaking, you would expect to have one job outside the car factory in everyjob in the car factory. But my worry is, that britain was quite an attractive location for car building in the 19805 location for car building in the 1980s for all kinds of Margaret Thatcher reasons. But if you look at europe and now its much more retracted to build cars in slovakia where you have a year of currency to Single Market and low wages. In a sense that factories we have are partly a hand overfrom sense that factories we have are partly a hand over from early location decisions and i worry that if we lose volume, its not going to be seen again. Professor, thank you for joining be seen again. Professor, thank you forjoining us. Lets speak now to jonathan, lets speak now tojonathan, just looking from where we are today and what we have seen, boris being booed as he arrived in scotland that voted largely to remain, slightly conflicting messages on a likely headed no deal brexit. Conflicting messages on a likely headed nodeal brexit. Yes, although its part of i think the same strategy, they may appear to be slightly at odds, but when you look at the overall picture, one thing thatis at the overall picture, one thing that is consistent is that any government minister you ask will say they dont want a no deal brexit and both michael dove and borisjohnson today saying its their name and intention to get a new brexit deal. But they are both clear that Withdrawal Agreement negotiated by therese and they must go, particularly the backstop part, and a new agreement must be reached. If thatis a new agreement must be reached. If that is not the case, government is going to work on the assumption that its not going to happen and they must prepare for a no deal brexit, so must prepare for a no deal brexit, so while borisjohnson said today its not his assumption there will bea its not his assumption there will be a no deal brexit, he did say that michael grove was right to prepare for that eventuality and that is what the government is doing because remember its not just what the government is doing because remember its notjust a case that believing that its right to prepare the country for the eventuality of no deal brexit and three months time, they also strategy and attempt to convince the eu that the uk is willing and ready to do that. In the hope that they will decide to offer concessions. And there is a cost, financially not only for government but for industries and companies all over that country and preparing for a no deal brexit. As the government got any political theories about that especially coming to the holiday period, net claiming they can achieve a lot. Yes government has not held back and spending money, £2 billion and more for funding allocated specifically to planning for a negative brexit, and the idea to share from the chancellor later this week at about extra funding for Government Departments to prepare for leaving that bad adl, something to the tune an extra £1 billion for that specific purpose, so it does come at a cost, Boris Johnson specific purpose, so it does come at a cost, borisjohnson will argue that leaving the eu even on the basis without adl would allow the uk to prosper economically in the future, there are plenty of people who say that isnt the case, nevertheless its costing not only government money to businesses across the uk money to prepare and put in place Contingency Planning for that eventuality and some may argue that cbi had done today, not enough assistance and guidance has been getting for a government to this plaint to get businesses and the country as a whole ready for that outcome. Giant didnt really know if government is talking to other european leaders . Boris johnson has had brief conversations with president macron, chancellor merkel and others, he has not spoken to the irish Prime Minister sophia, as far as know. And he seems Prime Minister as we know. He seems to not want to rush into anything, he appears to be holding off on that, he has no plans as far as we know to jet set around the european capitals holding bilateral conversations to try and change minds and either eu leaders. It seems any negotiations could wait frankly. And i think its part of that overall strategy again to let the eu perhaps still for a while and watch uk prepare for a no deal in the hope they may take that eventuality more seriously and start to offer concessions as a result, but not showing any signs of doing that stuff by. Thank you, jonathan. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 40 and 11 30 this evening in the papers our guestsjoining me tonight are kevin schofield, editor of the politicshome website and kate proctor, political reporter for the evening standard. Nothing to do for me and the rest of the season, if a game and if we play with only eight players available, i would like to try to win it, if a final and the first time i realise nobody sees it like that out to be honest, its like that out to be honest, its like a like that out to be honest, its likea curtain like that out to be honest, its like a curtain raise, its unbelievable, thinking constantly about the game and how to prepare. Officers say 15 other people were wounded when a gunman cut through a fence and opened fire at the annual garlic festival in the small town of gilroy, about 30 miles south of sanjose. The attacker was also shot dead by armed officers who were on the scene in undera minute. Dave lee reports from gilroy. Whats going on . the gunfire began at 5 41pm on sunday evening, as families were starting to head home. Theyre shooting as the shots rang out, there was first confusion and then panic, and eventually disbelief. Whod shoot up a garlic festival . A Food Festival one that obsessively celebrates the garlic grown here was now the scene of the 246th mass shooting in america this year. Wejust heard pop, pop, pop and we just went behind some tents and took cover. And we knew right away when we saw a lot of people just running away from there. We thought it was a firecracker and then when i looked to the side, we knew it wasnt. We both turned at the same exact time and saw him standing right there. He was within, what, ten feet of us . Yeah, he shot one shot. He was just going back and forth. And then he put the clip in and he started moving back and forth, walking towards our tent because thats where most of the people were in that area, and he just started shooting. Six year old Stephen Romero is the first of the dead to be identified. His mother and grandmother were wounded. Police said they took less than a minute to shoot dead the man once he opened fire, but even with that rapid response, the gunman was able to cause carnage. This is an active investigation. I would ask for the thoughts and prayers of the community as our Gilroy Police officers continue to investigate this tragic and senseless crime. Witnesses described the man as being white. Local media have named a suspect but as yet police havent confirmed his identity. Around 80,000 people descend on this small city every year for this beloved festival, but now it will become known as yet another instance of everyday American Life being torn apart by senseless gun violence. The met office is warning that thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of the uk tonight and tomorrow with a risk of more flooding following a weekend of heavy rain in some places. Parts of Northern England experienced around 100 millimetres of rain in 48 hours. North west and South West England and parts of wales could be hit by more heavy rain over the next 24 hours. The north west of england was particularly badly affected. Dave guest reports. Cleaning up after a night of chaos. This led the scene at the gin in castle field in manchester this morning, after floodwaters surged into the building last night. We have water flowing straight in to the gin so we have to move a large trap nails and its gone all the way from the gin to the courts, so its quite bad. We have had it flooded to the point we had to shut the door, we are at a point where its over flooded into the pool, its the worst its been. Flooded into the pool, its the worst its been. Because of this, this canal basin outside, last night it ove rflowed this canal basin outside, last night it overflowed as the waters were swollen by those from the river nearby. The wider had come up from the canal across this, many no longer any demarcation between the canal. It was supposed to be dry land but the danger for this canal. It was supposed to be dry land but the dangerfor this is if its lifted up and ended up partway on thejet, when its lifted up and ended up partway on the jet, when water went down they could potentially tip the people and, saying its the worst theyve ever known. People and, saying its the worst theyve ever known. No many canals dont have that problem because it iu ns dont have that problem because it runs at different places and never a problem because its not a river where you have floods and tides and currents, canals normally go along but its the worst ive ever seen it andi but its the worst ive ever seen it and i been doing this for about 35 yea rs. And i been doing this for about 35 years. This is not a river, its the 8555 expressway. The floodwaters closed it completely and still remain closed. No chance of golf here as well, greens were submerged but it was done deliberately as part ofan but it was done deliberately as part of an emergency plan to relieve pressure on the nearby river. The Environment Agency incident centre, they say they knew what was coming and prepared to deal at that. We have a number of embankments and farmer flood flight advance in storage reservoirs to protect people and property but the fact is. You keep your saying it could be worse. Yes, we protect well over 5000 properties. The fact that some parts at the night blast up two months worth of rain fell in one weekend. A man had to be rescued from a beach in norfolk last night after after his leg became wedged between rocks while the tide was in. He was stuck for nearly three hours at one point submerged up to his neck. Our correspondent robbie west reports. The moment the Emergency Services rescued a man who was trapped between the rocks on the north norfolk coast. The tide was in and they worked quickly to keep his head above the water. Sheringhams lifeguard was the first on the scene. The patient had his foot wedged down in between the rock and the structure here. When i arrived on the scene, he was getting hammered by pretty severe tidal waves and so i basically came in with a rescue tube to wedge it between him and the rock and then sheltered him with my body when the waves were impacting. The man and his family were on the steps here when a wave came over. He stepped in front of his children to protect them and he was knocked onto the boulders that are right here below us where he got his foot caught. After more than three hours in the water, fire crews had to use brute force to free him. So when we pulled up, the tide was probably at its highest. You couldnt break nothing. Theres been reports but you couldnt break nothing because its granite, its too hard. We did consider it, but the best way was, we got lucky, the tide went out, we got lucky. The man was treated for minor injuries in hospital. Some of his family, who i spoke to earlier, said they wanted to thank everybody that was involved in the rescue. Robbie west, bbc news, sheringham. Booze as borisjohnson arrives in edinburgh for talks with Nicola Sturgeon, he said he will work hard for a deal, she says the brexit approach is dangerous. Two mature particle entities, uk and the eu can get this done, i am confident. Beyond the bluff and bluster this government and the path it is pursuing is dangerous, i think. It is the moment thats reality tv fa ns it is the moment thats reality tv fans have been waiting for, after eight weeks on our screens, that winning couple of love island will be crowned tonight. Scotlands first minister Nicola Sturgeon says she believes the uk government is now pursuing a no deal strategy on brexit. Despite Boris Johnson stating his preference is to reach a new agreement with the eu. Britains largest business group, the cbi, has warned the government that neither the uk nor the eu is ready for it no deal brexit on 31st of october, and it has come up with recommendations to reduce any impact on companies. The cbi calls on the government to bring forward new plans for business engagement, review and update as brexit preparation advised by the middle of august, launch a new Communications Campaign to give businesses a simple and clear advice. Confirmed plans to make sure there is enough time to com plete make sure there is enough time to complete all necessary legislation on no deal. Scale up trials of crucial it systems in preparation for the end of october. And publish their Preparedness Measures by the beginning of october. Let us talk now to the head of brexit policy at the British Irish Chambers of commerce. Thank you for joining us. How do you think the impact ofa joining us. How do you think the impact of a no deal brexit would be felt . A no deal brexit would be the worst outcome for all concerned. You would see an immediate rupture to important trading relationships between the uk and the eu, and between the uk and the eu, and between our members, especially between our members, especially between the uk and ireland. We are talking about everything on the good aside from tariffs, customs, increased paperwork, complaints regulatory checks, and potential lack of access, loss of recognition of qualifications, things that businesses have not had to face before. It is a huge rupture to the trade relationship and by far the worst outcome for all concerned. But if the British Government does do what it says it is doing, prepare for no deal, how far will that go to help businesses that you are talking to . If we look at, obviously our members span both islands, the Irish Government published its contingency action plan earlier on this month, they have continuously engaged with businesses over that last number of yea rs, businesses over that last number of years, trying to get them to prepare for brexit. But unfortunately that m essa 9 es for brexit. But unfortunately that messages still are not sticking. Ahead of march we saw a number of businesses ramp up no deal preparations, then when the extension to article 50 came through, a lot of those alleviated. Within certain sectors in larger firms, there are contingency plans in place, they are well prepared, you are looking at things like life sciences, pharmaceutical companies, financial services, because the literary agencies have basically forced their hand to have those plans in place, and they have the money and the expertise to deal with them. But when you look at Smaller Companies who are time poor and do not have that necessary margins to be able to invest, and that is the thing, preparing for brexit is a costly business, if they do not have that money to invest, then they are further behind. Take Something Like the economic operator registration and identification numbers, which is the basic requirement that businesses will need to trade between the uk and the eu if there isa no between the uk and the eu if there is a no deal, in ireland, the uptake has been a 66 , in the uk it is around one third. This is one first step that businesses need to do. That is quite alarming. Businesses do need to step up their preparations. But businesses do not wa nt preparations. But businesses do not want a no deal. The British Irish Chamber supported their Withdrawal Agreement because it delivered a couple of key measures, its delivered an orderly withdrawal, delivered an orderly withdrawal, delivered an orderly withdrawal, delivered a transition period which businesses have said from day one is essential for any kind of brexit outcome. Its put forward a plan for close and comprehensive future trade deal. Other business groups came out with the same view. That loss of the transition period would be detrimentalfor transition period would be detrimental for businesses because not only would they have to make significant shifts in how they work on the 31st of october, there is the chance they would have to invest again further down the line whenever again further down the line whenever a future trade agreement is reached between the uk and the eu, costing more. That money businesses are putting into prepare for brexit is money they should be investing into the general operation, Business Investment has plummeted since brexit because people are trying to hold off and see what is going to happen and they do not want to spend money and get caught short if their worst co m es money and get caught short if their worst comes to pass. Do you think this is going to cause actualjobs orjust a reduction in profits . You reported earlier from Ellesmere Port, the vauxhall plans, thatis Ellesmere Port, the vauxhall plans, that is a clear indication that it will costjobs. For some businesses that way they trade might become non viable because of the increased cost of doing customs compliance, tariffs, everything else. If you are ina tariffs, everything else. If you are in a Services Business and you are relied on the uk the eu market and suddenly you cannot access that because uk is out of the Single Market with no transition arrangement, therefore you might not be able to get the income that you need to fund your business. There is potential for a loss ofjobs and loss of investment further down the line in terms of businesses might not lift and shift it when it comes to making their next strategic choice they may no longer look to the uk as the best option, they may look to elsewhere in the eu and the side that is the best place, and service their eu market from there. In terms of trading from Northern Ireland, is the assumption that there will have to be a hard border if there is a no deal exits . Because the eu said they do not want a gap in their Single Market, they have got to have controls, havent they . Yes, we understand the political commitments on both parts from the uk and the Irish Government to avoid a border on the islands of ireland at all costs, but there is still no real clear way forward how that can be achieved. On things like agri foods, especially, the eu has very clear rules around regulatory checks, that is to do with Consumer Health and food safety. There is a risk as to how that is going to be managed in the event of no deal and a lot of businesses, are concerned. We understand political commitment, we understand it is ambition for that to be achieved but there is one of the reasons why a lot of business groups especially in Northern Ireland came out in support of the backstop was because one thing it did achieve was it set down very clear ways of how that border could be avoided. We will have to leave that they are. Thank you very much. Three months after the journalist lyra mckee was killed, no one has been charged with her murder, in londonderry where she died, tensions remain. Our ireland correspondent has been back to the estate where lyra mckee was killed and reports now on the dissidents campaigns and threats to the community. In the area of derry known as the creggan, normality belies an undercurrent of violence. This mainly Catholic Housing estate remains one of Northern Irelands last strongholds where banned irish nationalist groups or dissident republicans still hold some sway. That is saying to people, just you keep quiet and well do what we like here. Since the death of lyra mckee, ira signs have appeared in the main street warning people not to speak to police. This one here says informers will be shot, with a picture of a rat on it. That actually is a very dehumanising poster. These people claim to be fighting for some form of human rights, where they treat people like animals if they dont agree with them. Police believe the ira gunman who shot lyra mckee was a teenager who was known locally. But warnings like these outside of schools make the threat to potential witnesses clear. Why cant they be taken down . Whos going to take them down . Fear creates a culture of silence. The school here and plenty of parents ive spoken to have told me they dont think theres anything that they can say publicly about these signs, and the sense you get is, as much as they dont want it, its just something that has to be accepted. The new ira claims to be continuing a long standing Armed Struggle to end british rule in Northern Ireland. This year, the group have claimed responsibility for a bomb outside derrys courthouse, explosives sent in letters to train stations and airports across the uk, and a bomb found under a Police Officers car in belfast. On friday, another dissident organisation tried to murder officers in craigavon, luring them towards a deadly booby trap. Since lyra mckees death, what police say are new iras political wing have launched a fresh drive to rally support. Mirroring struggles past, this is saoradh taking part in a picket line supporting ira prisoners many of whom have beenjailed for acts of violence and possession of weapons and explosives. Police say members of saoradh are also in the leadership of the new ira. Your sign over here says, salute the men and women of violence, what does that mean, exactly . This is a pretty public demonstration. Can you explain to people what you stand for . You put your posters up on the lamp post. One of their key messages in a new Poster Campaign is a call for a complete rejection of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, or psni, who they refer to as the crown forces. And to help with these campaigns, saoradh also recruit teenagers into its youth wing, eistigi. Your Campaign Encourages people to reject police, what exactly are you calling for . Do you support violence against authorities . Put it down. Our camera is pushed away. Bleep. Neighbourhood officers in derry face a constant threat. So how do you police a community then where there is an active campaign to destroy any trust in policing . Were basically trying to get people to understand that were doing a job, were there to help them without any favour. We do our best, get out and speak to them, speak to them on their normal terms. Let them see that we want to engage with them and we are open and there to help. Officers normally patrol the creggan in armoured land rovers but we accompany them for their first patrols on bikes. Thats all a show, it doesnt happen. It attracts attention. But the team say they want to do more face to face patrols in future. During the 30 year conflict in Northern Ireland known as the troubles, derry saw some of the worst of the violence, between the british army, pa ramilitaries and police. Today those historical tensions live on. The troubles began here in this city in 68, and theyve never really gone away. There is some support for that message, then, you think . There is in derry, yeah. There would be. But the most extreme views of violent dissidents are opposed by the vast majority of those who live here. These groups need to know that they are not representing the people of this town when theyre putting up posters like that and speaking like that. Some Community Workers who say they cannot appear on camera have told us that behind the scenes there are negotiations taking place with the people responsible for the signs to try to get them removed. But so far, with little success. Paramilitaries cast a shadow here that many believe only the community of creggan can resolve. Emma vardy, bbc news, derry. The headlines. It is the moment reality tv fans have been waiting for, after eight weeks on our screens the winning couple in love islands will be crowned tonight, for couples are left this evening, and the longest running couple is the favourite to wind. What does it what is it that makes love island so popular . I am joined by a writer and a love island fan. I have never seen it. I did watch three minutes in the newsroom recently as background research. What is the premise of love islands for those of us who do not follow it . The premise of the show is that you start with six boys, six girls, going into a villa in your cat, eve ryo ne going into a villa in your cat, everyone is insanely attractive, everybody is incredibly tall, hourglass figures, they are meant to couple up, it is broadcast for one hour every night except saturday. On what basis do people vote . It is a public vote. Every night, every week . It depends on what the producers feel. It is a little bit like big brother, you watch it. The public are able to vote at least once a week on who their favourite couple is, to save a couple. Ultimately, whoever wins the show it is up toa ultimately, whoever wins the show it is up to a public vote. Who is watching tonight . I would say eve ryo ne watching tonight . I would say everyone is watching this programme but it is obvious and not the case. There is a heavy millennial audience, target is 16 34 year old, i know people that are watching it in that age demographic, but also people in their 50s and 60s. It is a releasa ble people in their 50s and 60s. It is a releasable show because it has so many real moment that you can relate to, whether it is friendship, romance, heartbreak, falling in love. It is for everyone. Is a young audience that is more suited, advertisers are very keen . Love island is incredibly marketing and advertising heavy, we are seeing a lot of Product Placement in the villa this year. Coke cans carefully placed in rom com is an reality shows previously. We are seeing Product Placement. It is marketing thing. The idea is to reach 500 k instagram followers. Tonight, talk us through it, who are the favourites, why . Tonight you will get the more boring episode of love islands. You will not be seeing screaming matches, huge heartbreak. You will see the final people there, romantic couples. People want to see true romantic bonds on the show. You essentially just see them romantic bonds on the show. You essentiallyjust see them having their final essentiallyjust see them having theirfinal moments on love island. How do you know that is true romantic bonds . A lot of people do think it is faked. Having spoken to a lot of x islanders, likejosh, a finalist last year, chris, a finalist last year, chris, a finalist in 2017, there are elements that are egged on, the producers, if they know you want a conversation, you are with one girl, as they say in the villa, you want to crack on with someone else, producers will encourage you to have that conversation, however according to the islanders and itv it is not something where they tell one person to go and make out with this other person over here. You do see people trying to form real bombs, whether for the benefit of the viewers or themselves. Form real bonds. You see people 24 hours a day, seven days per week. You think you are getting an idea of who actually loves each other likes each other. The putin at in the is one direct the puritan ne is wondering. One series per year. Two series . Thats will be the undoing of the show i think that i am sure i will be eating my words when the show does even better. If you are a viewer it takes a lot out of your day, having to spend one hour every single night is a big commitment. Doing that twice a year, 16 weeks out of 52 weeks will be inundated with love islands, i think thats will be saturation point for love islands. People have commented on a lack of diversity. I think that is a massive issue for love islands. We are seeing more diversity this year. In terms of physical diversity. In terms of racial diversity, physical diversity, body types, we only see stereotypically attractive bodies, very thin, size six, they have to try to get more bodies in, but you are still seeing somebody that looks like kim kardashian. Do you vote . I vote early and often. I voted for amber and brad. Amber vote early and often. I voted for amberand brad. Amber is vote early and often. I voted for amber and brad. Amber is the only island outlet from day one, she has spent every day in that villa for the last eight weeks, she has had her heart broken, she was with somebody else, he sort of betrayed her ina somebody else, he sort of betrayed her in a very dramatic way, that sent him to be the number one trending topic in the world on twitter after that episode. I voted for her because i want to see her happy and she seems to be genuinely happy. Happy and she seems to be genuinely happy i happy and she seems to be genuinely happy. Iam happy and she seems to be genuinely happy. I am just being a suckerfor itv marketing. We will see who wins, all will be revealed soon. It all ends at 20 to 11 tonight. It is about to start. We will let you go. I hope you can get home quickly.
