After almost 16 years a former mayor and Cornwall councillor across three terms of office is stepping down from local politics. Andrew Wallis first joined Porthleven Town Council and Kerrier District Council, before being elected to Cornwall Council in 2009 when it became a unitary authority. He won his seat as an Independent after polling 31.5% of the votes and beating the next closest candidate, Dick Powell, by just 17 votes. Andrew went on to keep the seat for three consecutive terms of office, as councillor for the Porthleven and Helston South division for the last 12 years. Now, with another period of change at the council, as the number of seats drops from 123 to 87, his division is being split – into Porthleven, Breage & Germoe, and Helston South & Meneage, with the town only having two seats now (Helston North being the other).
A new bridleway is to be created to complete the missing link between Helston and Porthleven thanks to a grant of of more than £32,000. The route from Porthleven into Penrose is popular with residents, who currently use Shrubberies Hill lane to access the estate at Penrose Hill. However, the South Kerrier Alliance, which is behind the project, said the lane is narrow with high hedges and no footpath with frequent traffic making it a difficult and dangerous route. It is said that creating the new route will enable safe access and, importantly, complete the missing part of a direct bridleway link between Helston and this part of Porthleven, benefitting walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Promotion of Helston Already funded by Helston Town Council, a marketing strategy for Helston has already been fully implemented. In the bid Helston – which currently has 12,184 residents, around 2.1 per cent of Cornwall’s population – is described as having pockets of significant deprivation , while also having many benefits including good schools, excellent events such as Flora Day, the Christmas lights switch on and Helstonbury, and a good sense of community.
Vandals have struck at one of Helston s most popular beauty spots - and police are now involved. The park team said it was sad to report that at some point between 3pm on Monday, December 28 and 9am on Tuesday, December 29 there were a number of incidents of nuisance vandalism in Coronation Park. These included the litter bin by the shelter next to be boating lake disappearing – with fears it is now in the adjacent River Cober. The team said: Based on the evidence – marks on the fence and drag marks on the bank to the river – we believe the bin has been thrown into the river.
