At least 8 people are dead and five persons are reported missing after heavy rains lashed Kerala since Friday evening. A team of Army officials attached to the Pangode Military camp in the state capital has already left to Kottayam district where a landslide took place at Kootikal. Two families comprising 12 people bore the major brunt, of which six people have been declared dead, while four continue to be missing. The official release by the Chief Minister`s office informed that one team of NDRF each has already been deployed in Pathanamthitta, Thrissur and Malappuram districts.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall’ in isolated places of Kerala on October 4, 5 and 6. The depression off the Sri Lankan coast may turn into a low-intensity cyclone, IMD said in its all-India weather warning bulletin released on Wednesday. The three districts - Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad - located on the northern and central part of the state are more likely to be hit by the rainfall.
The state of Kerala has been deluged this pre-monsoon and surpassed previous records. All three months of this season have recorded surplus rains for Kerala. Courtesy cyclone Tauktae, month of May was swamped and the season has become the rainiest to record 613mm rainfall so far against the normal of 270mm for Kerala.
