The incident occurred onboard the Kannur-Ernakulam Intercity Express around 4.15 pm, both Railway Protection Force and Railway Police officials confirmed. However, neither of the officials specified as to whose custody the man was in.

On the night of April 2, Saifi, hailing from Delhi, doused petrol on fellow passengers and set them afire while the train was moving from Kozhikode to Kannur.
As per the police, the suspect had poured petrol on a passenger and set fire inside the D1 compartment of the Alappuzha-Kannur Main Executive Express train near Elathoor in Kozhikode district in which three people lost their lives.
