Event organizers cautiously optimistic

March 17, 2021 March 17, 2021 By AARON ROGERS Daily Press Correspondent A year without the usual Grant County events and celebrations has been hard on residents. From sporting events like the Tour of the Gila bicycle race and the Wild Wild West Pro Rodeo to festivals like the Blues Festival and Fiesta Latina to holiday parades, residents have had to either adjust to virtual versions or live with the disappointment of events being canceled altogether. And that’s even without considering the economic impact of those cancellations for restaurants and other small businesses. The ongoing efforts to vaccinate everyone, combined with the loosening restrictions that come from lower case numbers of COVID-19, are starting to raise hopes that some of these events might be making a return even as soon as the Independence Day parade this summer.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health COVID-19 Vaccine Dashboard, as of February 15th, Grant County has partially or fully vaccinated a total of 20.9% of its population and ranks 16th highest out of state’s 33 counties. In addition, Luna County has fully or partially vaccinated a total 16.3% of its population, Hidalgo County for a total of 17.5% and Catron County for a total of 24.4%. At this time 621,173 New Mexico residents have registered to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Statewide, a total of 300,913 primary doses have been administered along with 136,990 booster doses.

At Tuesday evening’s regular meeting of the Silver City Town Council, Mayor Ken Ladner proclaimed it so, intoning: “Whereas, on February 15, 1878, the Speaker of the Territorial House of Representatives of … New Mexico, Juan B. Patron, presided over passage of ‘An Act to incorporate the Town of Silver City in the County of Grant’ which was signed that day by the Governor; and whereas, this act of incorporation constitutes the official recognition by the Territory of New Mexico that certain rights and powers of self-government shall be granted in perpetuity to the citizens of the Town of Silver City; and whereas, for
