The industrial structures sandwich the Cricketers Arms, in Coney Lane. One of the buildings is already part-demolished. The other is an empty, four-storey former warehouse. Bulldozing of the structures – together with work to strengthen the walls of the pub – was among the conditions of planning approval for the new £10 million retail development to be built on the neighbouring long-derelict East Parade site. Discount supermarket giant Aldi was given the go-ahead for the development earlier this month. The company will build a new, bigger supermarket to replace its existing outlet in nearby Gresley Road. Plus there will be another large retail store, drive-through coffee shop and three smaller shops on the same site.
