No SL representative for the UNHRC monitoring committee

Sunday, 25 April 2021 - 16:04 It is reported that a Sri Lankan representative will not be appointed to the Sri Lanka Human Rights Monitoring Committee appointed under the latest resolution on Sri Lanka adopted by the UN Human Rights Council. The commitee will operate from Geneva and would be made up of international professionals. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has decided not to nominate a representative of the Sri Lankan government for this purpose. However, when we inquired about this, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated that he was opposed to this unilateral decision of the Geneva Human Rights Council.

Compulsory cremation of COVID-19 bodies cannot continue, say UN experts

Share: COLOMBO (News 1st): UN Human Rights experts have urged the Sri Lankan government to end its policy of mandatory cremation of individuals who die of COVID-19 in the country. “Forcibly cremating individuals who die of COVID-19 is contrary to the beliefs of certain minorities including Muslims in Sri Lanka,” 4 UN Rapporteurs said in a statement. The statement noted said the imposition of cremation as the only option for handling the bodies confirmed or suspected of COVID-19 amounts to a human rights violation. “There has been no established scientific evidence in any country that burial of dead bodies leads to increased risk of spreading communicable diseases such as COVID-19,” it added.

International media reports on Dhammika syrup turning sour

Thursday, 21 January 2021 - 11:11 International media has reported regarding the Covid syrup developed by Dhammika from Kegalle stating that it has turned sour.  The reports stated that a self-styled Sri Lankan holy man’s supposed miracle potion to prevent Covid-19 has turned sour after a minister who publicly drank it was taken to hospital with the virus. Thousands defied public gathering restrictions to swamp a village in central Sri Lanka last month to get the syrup made by Dhammika Bandara. The women and child development minister, Piyal Nishantha de Silva, was among several politicians who consumed the concoction, but parliamentary officials said he had since tested positive for coronavirus and was taken to a treatment centre according to the reports.

Indian-made COVID vaccine to be exported from today

Wednesday, 20 January 2021 - 9:32 The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has announced that the COVID vaccine, manufactured in India, will be distributed to Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and the Seychelles from today. However, several countries, including Sri Lanka, are awaiting drug regulatory and clearance approvals from those countries. The Hiru News team inquired from the Director-General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena regarding this. He said the National Drug Regulatory Authority was preparing a report and would submit it to the Presidential Task Force for approval next Monday. He further stated that further steps will be taken to obtain the vaccine with the Government of India through the Presidential Task Force on Corruption.
