Keep Austin Local: Ecuadorian Chocolate Factory in Cedar Park

On Monday, KVUE stopped by Ecuadorian Chocolate Factory in Cedar Park. The shop has been in Cedar Park since 2018 after owner Carlos Galarza, his wife, Isabel, and their three daughters left their 200-acre plantation in Ecuador to move to Central Texas. On the walls at the Ecuadorian Chocolate Factory are photos from the owner’s cacao plantation, showing customers where the chocolate comes from and the process from farm to factory. The employees are eager to share the chocolate-making process with any customers interested.

On Wednesday, KVUE stopped by Opal Divine’s, a South Austin restaurant and bar that’s been around for 21 years. Opal Divine’s was started by owner Michael Parker and his wife, Susan. The restaurant is named after Susan’s grandmother, Opal Divine. The restaurant was set to have a strong 2020 after Interstate 35 construction had been completed. February 2020 was their biggest February ever, and as they were preparing for St. Patrick’s Day, their biggest day of the year, everything shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Author: Brittany Flowers Updated: 5:46 PM CDT July 12, 2021 AUSTIN, Texas KVUE wants to help “Keep Austin Local” by highlighting local businesses, events and people that make Austin special. On Monday, KVUE stopped by Mission Dogs, a gourmet hot dog spot that’s been around since 2013. It was started by Mike Farley as a hot dog cart, but now is a brick-and-mortar in East Austin. Mission Dogs is known for its bacon-wrapped hot dogs with Asian-style toppings and sauces. Farley said the flavors were inspired by dishes he had growing up. The Mission Dog has sautéed onions, jalapenos, ketchup, mustard and mayo. The VietDog has cucumber, carrot and cilantro marinated in seasoned rice vinegar and is topped with chili pepper garlic sauce and Sriracha mayo. See its other menu items here.

More One way you can help Austin Creative Reuse is by volunteering. There are a few different ways to volunteer, including processing donations at home or in the center, teaching workshops or doing donation drives. The center has education programs and workshops that people can participate in, where they offer affordable art classes for all ages and skill levels, reuse artist and maker showcases, low-cost studio rentals and sustainability meetups.
