January has come and gone. Heck, February is over half over. But just now we re learning an ice cold fact that shouldn t shock anyone in the midst of a pandemic: we didn t do this whole Dry January thing too well. Quick, in case you don t know what that is, it means you resolve to have NO alcohol for the month of January. Why? Maybe a cleanse from the holidays or, to kick off the new year with more brain cells? Maybe to achieve a short New Years resolution? I m not sure. Honestly, it s not my thing and I didn t even try to participate.
Cedar Falls Invokes Snow Emergency for Parts of Town
With the recent snow falls, the City of Cedar Falls has declared a snow emergency beginning at 9:00 pm on Tuesday, February 16, until 7:00 am on Wednesday February 17. During this time, the city will be hauling snow from the Downtown and College Hill areas of the city. As a result, the Snow Emergency will be in effect for the Downtown Parkade and College Hill areas only, and does not apply to any other part of the city.
During the time of the snow emergency, any vehicle blocking traffic or parking in the designated area after that time could receive a citation, or could be towed away at the owner’s expense.

It s cold. Duh, right? It s cold in Northeast Iowa, it s cold in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and Oklahoma too. Difference is, we re more or less use to it come February. That said, because it s been so cold here for so long, consumption of natural gas is much higher than even normal. As a result, many Iowa utility companies, including the Cedar Falls Utility Company (CFU), Aliant Energy and Mid American Energy are all encouraging customers to go easy, when possible, on usage.

Waterloo Police Will Have Social Workers Riding Along on Calls
Social workers will be working closely with Waterloo s police force when they respond to emergency calls according to a news release from the Waterloo Police Department on Monday, February 15. The social workers will be from Elevate CCBHC in Waterloo, and will be embedded within the police force as part of the initiative.

Waterloo Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald said on the matter,
The goal of this program is to decriminalize behavioral crises, and reduce stigmas, by having Crisis Specialists available 24/7 both within the Police Department and through Elevate and other service providers.
