Fabulous Flip Sides of The Mob with James Holvay
James Holvay celebrates the 50th anniversary of The Mob, his songwriting of The Buckinghamsâ 1960s hits, and his new EP âSweet Soul Songâ on Mob Town Records
Author:
Congratulations on your new five song EP Sweet Soul Song which captures the classic sound of Chicago soul music. I enjoy it. It’s so fun. You have been playing guitar a long time.
JAMES HOLVAY: Thank you. I’m glad that you like it. Yes, in the early 1960s, I played guitar at record hops with stars who were visiting Chicago for appearances on WGN television during my junior and senior years of high school, backing up Brian Hyland, Lesley Gore, Johnny Tillotson, Freddie Cannon and others. I began songwriting, too. The local singer Ral Donner ended up recording two of my songs, which came out on the Red Bird label, but didn’t chart.

. It certainly has all the right power and variety, but before we get to that, let’s start with the song we first heard from you on the radio in America, “Dirty Love,” which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. That A side was catchy and powerful and the flip side, “Girl’s Going Out of Her Head,” has such a fluid guitar solo from you, with a song style reminding me of Sammy Hagar.

double vinyl album package. It includes a poster, a bumper sticker and trading cards.
STEVE THOMAS: Trading cards. Ha ha. Who would have thought that I would be on a trading card?
Steve Thomas in the middle
GM:
My wife Donna and I moved from the Midwest to Dallas in 1980 and unfortunately didn’t hear “You’ve Got What I Need” on the radio that spring but we would have loved it. Donna’s favorite group is Boston and your song has those Boston-like harmonies that we enjoyed on their first two albums, and this single is so catchy.

is certainly one of my favorite albums of 2021.
IAN JONES: Thank you very much.
AGNIESZKA SWITA: Thank you. We really appreciate that.
GM:
I went through your list of influences and I think I may have found a match in your opening number “The Lighthouse,” sounding like what may happen if Barbra Streisand sang with Pink Floyd.
