Two Lebanese lawmakers charged in connection with the 2020 Beirut port blast have been re-elected in the first poll since the catastrophe, leaving some families of victims fearing further delays in a stalled investigation into the explosion. Many in Lebanon blame the disaster, which killed more than 215 people, on safety failings by senior political and security officials. Accountability for the blast emerged as a main rallying issue for opposition candidates and voters.

H R W says removal of Judge Sawwan makes a mockery of justice and is an insult to the victims – Ya Libnan

Share: The Court of Cassation decided to remove Judge Fadi Sawwan the chief prosecutor investigating last year’s massive Beirut port explosion and replace him with another judge . According to Al Jadeed TV a meeting was held at Baabda presidential Palace which was attended by caretaker justice minister Mary Claude Nejm, Judge Ghassan Ouidat , President Michel Aoun and his advisor Salim Jreisati and they decided to replace Sawwan with another judge who is closely associated with president Aoun . The name of the new judge was mot released to the media . Human Rights Watch the New-York based watchdog, said the decision to remove Investigating Judge Fadi Sawwan “makes a mockery of justice ” and is an “insult to the victims.”
