CHATRA : A woman who was brought to community health centre in Pratappur block after snake bite died unattended on Monday evening. The woman was identified as Kaushalya Devi (50), a resident of Baudhadih village.
Kaushalya s son, Om Prakash Paswan, said his mother was with him in the fields sowing paddy when a poisonous snake bit her on her right hand. As she lost conciousness, relatives and villagers who were working in the nearby fields took her to the community health centre around 5.30pm on Monday.
Paswan said not a single doctor was present at the health centre when they brought in his mother. As Kaushalya remained unattended, Paswan’s cries for help attracted the attention of a few youths who were playing in an adjacent field. They rushed in and started looking for a doctor. After half an hour, one Dr Arvind Kumar came and declared the woman dead.

With repeated lockdowns being imposed by governments to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, coping with economic distress apart from impending health hazards, has proved to be difficult for many, including Kaushalya Devi, a domestic help.
As the sole breadwinner of the family, losing jobs when the nationwide lockdown was imposed last year, looking out for new work, ensuring the family’s safety and reeling under debt, she had to fend off multiple setbacks simultaneously.
“When the lockdown was announced last year, I lost work in one of the houses where I worked. It was also the place where I earned a chunk of my income. Losing that job meant that I was literally surviving on less than half of what I used to earn earlier. It took me almost six months before I found a replacement,” said Ms. Devi.
