KEYNOTES: Rosemary returns from Arizona, Mexico vacation

Just returned from 10-day vacation in Tucson, Arizona and Rocky Point, Mexico, with Julie and Camille, daughter and daughter-in-law, my thoughtful and accommodating hostesses. Their spring weather means 60s at sunrise and in the 90s by noon, but, as any Arizonian explains, “it’s dry heat,” and it was. Enjoyed several mornings at the Tucson Racquet and Swim club, where Julie did laps in the 75-degree pool, and I managed to safely water-walk. My rollator provides the necessary mobility in most handicapped-accessibly areas. In between reading and crossword-puzzling, my hostesses provided delicious, healthy meals. They also hosted a five-day stay on the Sea of Cortez in Rocky Point, Mexico, at a lovely villa on the ocean. The Mojave River Valley Horsemen’s Association’s first show of 2021 featured an obstacle challenge held at Marjorie Coulter’s Ranch in Apple Valley in late February.
A hardy bunch of riders and handlers tackled the challenge, which left Judge Kathleen O’Malley with some tough decisions to make.
At the end of the day, Haley Samano, handling Second Hand Rose, took home the Mini Buckle, with Reserve going to Gina Cunningham and Jimmy.
In the Riding divisions, buckle winners were Stacie Sammuels, Beginner; Penny Mooney, Intermediate; and Brandi Sammuels, Advanced.

NEWPORT, Ore. – Analyzing thousands of genetic markers in albacore tuna from the Pacific Ocean, researchers at Oregon State University have learned that just seven dozen of those markers are needed to determine which side of the equator a fish comes from.
The scientists also discovered that fish from different hemispheres intermingle and sometimes breed with each other.
Published today in Evolutionary Applications, the findings are an important step toward better understanding the population structure of a species that’s a vital and inexpensive source of protein for people around the globe.
