KEYNOTES: Rosemary returns from Arizona, Mexico vacation

Just returned from 10-day vacation in Tucson, Arizona and Rocky Point, Mexico, with Julie and Camille, daughter and daughter-in-law, my thoughtful and accommodating hostesses. Their spring weather means 60s at sunrise and in the 90s by noon, but, as any Arizonian explains, “it’s dry heat,” and it was. Enjoyed several mornings at the Tucson Racquet and Swim club, where Julie did laps in the 75-degree pool, and I managed to safely water-walk. My rollator provides the necessary mobility in most handicapped-accessibly areas. In between reading and crossword-puzzling, my hostesses provided delicious, healthy meals. They also hosted a five-day stay on the Sea of Cortez in Rocky Point, Mexico, at a lovely villa on the ocean. It was a five-hour trip southward for the drivers, me and their dog “Bodhi,” but worth every hour of viewing the mountains change from red to black, and continuous stretches of the tall, stately saguaros, their graceful arms bearing seasonal bouquets of yellow and white flowers. Sometimes the continuously flat lands were dotted with distant ranches, and we got a glimpse of their horses or cattle. The entry to Mexico was eventless, simply requiring us to show our passports or passcards. The spacious, hospitable villa at Rocky Point was among a row of several, all of different shades of color, in a ring about the Sea of Cortez, which was only steps away from our Mexican vacation home. The ever dependable tides always came almost to our thatched beach shelter twice every 24 hours. My hostesses enjoyed diving into the waves, sailing on a stand-up paddle board, and beating me at Scrabble on our roof-top viewing spot; while I was immersed in the surf-sounds, the truly blue shades of the Sea and the sky, and the soft, continuous winds. Saturday evening we traveled northward to the seaport of Rocky Point, a fishing village, alive for the weekend with vendors, hawkers, live music, Mexican families. Colorful wares lined the stalls, and it appeared that the entire village and its families had turned out for weekend, even children in carriages wearing masks. My hostesses pushed me through the melee in my transit chair. We dined at “The Point,” a restaurant whose sturdy stilts raised it up from the sea below. We enjoyed native flounder and crisp salads while we watched the sun set behind the bordering mountains. On our return to the USA, we were behind many northward bound cars, but throughout the long wait we viewed many Mexican vendors, sometimes families, displaying and carrying their colorful wares, home cooked tortillas, fajitas, etc., providing us with a glimpse into the commercial lives of some of natives. At the border, we showed our identifications to border police, replied that we were all U.S. citizens, and were waved into our home country. It was my first trip to Mexico, and thanks to my hostesses it was simply wonderful!
