Researchers collaborate with LA County to plant and maintain trees

Researchers counted and attempted to identify the species and size of 22,000 trees in a 3.5 square mile zone northeast of USC’s Health Sciences campus. (Sara Alvarado | Daily Trojan) In an area northeast of USC’s Health Sciences campus, there are about 22,000 trees. Each tree has been identified by species and size by members of the USC Urban Trees Initiative.  The USC Urban Trees Initiative has remotely recorded and analyzed a 3.5-square-mile zone block-by-block to provide data that could advise the Los Angeles community on where to plant and maintain trees to maximize benefits.  “The heart of this project is really providing valuable data that the city and other community groups can use to successfully plant trees,” said Kate Weber, executive director of the public exchange and founder of the project. “We’re developing a scientific roadmap that ideally makes the city’s urban forestry efforts in this area more effective.”

Wed 8:30 | School Librarians Offer Antidote To Disinformation

Pixabay Life is grand in the information age, but for that ONE problem: along with all the information available to us, there s also a lot of DISinformation around. Pick your poison; from flat-earthers to voter-fraud conspiracies, there s plenty to go around. Kate Weber wants to reduce the abundance as much as possible. She s the president of the Oregon Association of School Libraries, promoting the value of libraries and the people who staff them. Libraries can do wonders to direct young people to the truth rather than the rumor, even while students are not spending much time in school these days. Kate Weber visits the JX to make the case.

USC To Create Roadmap For LA s Urban Forest Initiative In Eastside Communities

USC s urban forest project will focus on 3 1/2 square miles northeast of the university s Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights, which includes parts of El Sereno, Ramona Gardens and Lincoln Heights. USC researchers noted that the area suffers from poor air quality and little shade, and the median household income is about half of L.A. overall. L.A. s Green New Deal s tree initiative calls for increasing the forest canopy in specifically low-income heat zones by 50% by 2028. This partnership between the city and USC researchers is taking on global warming by improving sustainability where people live, USC President Carol L. Folt said. It s a good example of how we can enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods as we face the challenges of climate change.
