Fairfield High School Board Recap from Thursday

The Fairfield Community High School Board of Education met Thursday night for their monthly meeting, In personnel matters: Accepted the resignation of Jane Best as Tennis Coach Hired Holden Sandiford as the new Tennis Coach. Hired Shawn Rush as Assistant Baseball Coach. Rehired Assistant Principal Bobby Wells for 1 year. Rehired Technology Director Marc Leighty for 1 year. The Personnel action took place after an Executive Session. The board set graduation for Saturday, May 13 at 5:00 pm. Approved the 2023-2024 School Calendar. Approved a motion to let fuel bids for FY24. In the Superintendents Report: Supt. Jill Fulkerson informed the board that parent/student surveys would be taking place in the near future. This week is FCCLA Week, with next week being FFA Week, including a full week of activities. Attendees heard from 4 of the 8 Illinois State Scholars regarding their future plans. FCHS Fall Sports Awards The Mules held their team awards last night. The Mules volleyball team held their awards at the Journey Church. The Ceremony started with Volleyball head coach Chet Snyder thanking the crowd for coming. He then moved to some key milestones that the team hit this season. The team finished with a overall record of 33-6 the 2nd most wins in FCHS history, BDC champs for the fifth straight time, regional champions, Emerson Robbins set the school record in kills and Rylee Edwards set the school record in assists. As far as awards go here is how it went: Freshman most improved Libby Kline, Most Improved JV Lilly Gacek (Gay-sick), most improved varsity Kate Book, Defensive player of the year Lucy Britt, Team MVP Emmerson Robbins and Lady Mule Award Kaylie Barger. The Mules football team held their award ceremony at 7pm at the FCHS gym. Coach Townsend started by thanking everybody who played a role in this season. 40-year-old Ray E. Tate was sentenced Friday to natural life in prison without parole in Wayne County Circuit Court. He pleaded guilty last month to the first-degree murder of Wayne County Deputy Sean Riley, who was operating in the course of his official duties. The sentencing hearing lasted about three hours. During the hearing, Judge Michael Molt read Tate his appeal rights, saying that any appeal must be filed in a written motion to a trial court within 30 days if he wishes to appeal. The sentence is to take effect immediately, and Tate was remanded to Jefferson County officials for transport. Wayne County deputies arrested 41-year-old Sarah R. McKenzie of Sims Thursday night on a White County warrant for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct, and unlawful use of property. Emma Wiseman of Albion has been recognized as a 2022 Illinois FFA Top 10 Section President, and she will be honored during the 2022 Illinois FFA State Convention in June. Wiseman was the 2020-2021 Edwards County FFA President and is the current FFA Section 23 President. She received her State FFA Degree in 2021, a Top-10 Chapter President Award in 2021, and the Gold Chapter President Award in 2020. Fairfield police investigated a traffic crash at the intersection of Commerce Drive and West Delaware Street yesterday afternoon. Police say 27-year-old Fairfield resident Jeffrey May was driving a 2012 Chevrolet and pulled into the path of a 2010 Freightliner bus operated by 56-year-old Waltonville resident Tammy Durietz. No injuries were reported, and May was cited for disobeying a stop sign. No injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident about a mile north of Cisne Thursday afternoon.
