School nutrition officials across Vermont are urging lawmakers to permanently fund a universal free meals program that’s set to expire at the end of the school year. But Gov. Phil Scott says he doesn’t want to use limited taxpayer resources to buy free breakfast and lunch for kids whose families can pay.
Since March 2020, all Vermont K-12 students have been able to eat free breakfast and lunch at school. There’s no stigma attached to taking school food, no awkwardness about unpaid balances in the cafeteria. That may change when temporary federal funding runs out this summer. But advocates, teachers and staff believe this is one pandemic adaptation worth keeping. (Paid Post)
