School voucher legislation sparks concern at school board meeting
February 17, 2021WOLFEBORO Governor Wentworth Regional School District Board Member Krista Abear raised concern during the Feb. 8 meeting about proposed legislation in the state house (HB20) in favor of granting $3,700 vouchers to students attending private and religious institutions or engaged in homeschooling. She said it takes money away from public schools, with no financial accountability, a contrast to the very thoughtful budget process the board engages in, and includes no accounting of student growth or the qualifications for instruction. I don t understand what problem the bill is trying to solve, Superintndent Kathy Cuddy-Egbert said, adding that in addition to the lack of oversight: students with disabilities waive their rights under federal and state disability laws, including the right to services; long term studies have shown that participants in voucher programs have significantly lower math
WOLFEBORO â State Parks and Recreation Director Phil Bryce alerted members of the Mount Washington Commission at their virtual meeting on Friday, Jan. 29, to a major change in the operation of the âstate sideâ of the now permanently financed Land and Water Conservation Fund.
The state no longer determines how this money will be spent; instead, the decisions are made in Washington.
Under this new procedure, land acquisition will be LWCFâs primary goal rather infrastructure projects such as upgrades and replacements, Bryce said.
That said, money to help fund the sewage treatment plant â still in the design phase â in the Mt. Washington State Park likely won t qualify for LWCF dollars, he warned.
CONWAY â Two returning local state representatives will be part of the Republican leadership team in the House of Representatives over the next two years.
Rep. Mark McConkey of Freedom and Rep. Karen Umberger of Conway were prevailed in November after losing their seats two years ago.
Now, McConkey has been named vice chair of the powerful Public Works and Highways Committee, and Umberger will chair the House Finance Division II Committee, responsible for the budgets of Safety, Transportation, Education, Fish and Game, the N.H. Lottery, and Police Standards and Training.
âIâm delighted,â Umberger, who held the position from 2016-18, told the Sun.
