TENAFLY A pair of homes once owned by one of the wealthiest people in New Jersey are among sites across the borough that will be put in the spotlight by historical markers.
In the coming weeks, markers will be placed in front of the Sisson Houses on Highwood Avenue, which were built between 1867 and 1874 for the family of Charles Sisson, founder of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey. The homes are currently private residences.
One will also be installed in front of 91 West Clinton Ave., known as the Demarest-Lyle House, which dates to 1794 and previously belonged to the prominent Blauvelt and Demarest families. The house is on both state and national historic registers.
TENAFLY The monument honoring the 26th president of the United States will be getting a makeover starting this summer.
The Theodore Roosevelt Monument on Riveredge Road will be restored after years of damage inflicted by the elements and by acts of vandalism.
Karen Neus, chair of the Tenafly Historic Preservation Commission, said a Westchester-based professional stone carver and sculptor, Bob Carpenter, will do the restoration work on the Indiana limestone sculpture, which has been a fixture in town since 1928.
New decorative lighting spotlighting the monument will be installed by Focus Lighting, based in New York City. I am very excited that we re getting to the point of initiating the project, Neus said. Of course, over time, things that are outside in the weather need maintenance and upkeep.
