Newman will not get jail time for tax charges. Charges against newman and Richland County councilman kelvin washington came up after a state investigation into the use of penny sales tax money. A bond hearing this morningand a guilty plea this afternoon. Newman pleaded guilty to failing to file state tax returns for the years 2012 and 2013. He toto a judge he thought t d filed for those years. His admission involved back taxes totalling a little more than 98 hundred dollars which he has agreed to pay along with prosecution costs of an additional thousand dollars. These charges came about as the state department of revenue was looking into the backgrounds of people connected to the penny tax effortbut in to make it clear his issues were personal and have nothing to do with tax revenues.
