Schenectady school board still searching for interim superintendent and other top positions | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS The Schenectady school board on Wednesday night met in closed session for the fifth time in less than a month to screen candidates for the interim superintendent position, but officials on Thursday could not offer an expected timeline for filling the role. Finding an interim superintendent as a bridge to initiating a new search for a permanent superintendent, though, is just the start of a long hiring to-do list facing the Schenectady school board. The board also has to hire a deputy superintendent and district directors of human resources, business and finance, and planning and accountability. The three director positions are based in the district’s central office, report directly to the superintendent and oversee departments that manage vast portions of district operations.

Police: Relative of track athlete entered Schenectady High School grounds, punched coach | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS SCHENECTADY – A city man responded to a relative being ousted from track practice by punching her coach, investigators said. The head outdoor track and field coach had sent two female teammates home after they had an argument on Facebook, district spokeswoman Karen Corona said Tuesday.  Afterward, 20-year-old Hassan Alhassan of Schenectady came onto the track and twice punched the veteran coach in his face, according to police. He left in a vehicle. The alleged assault occurred just before noon May 1. The coach’s left eye and right jaw were injured, and he suffered pain, swelling and bruising to his face, according to police.

April 16 deadline to apply for Schenectady City School District summer enrichment program | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS GAZETTE COVERAGE The number of applications so far has lagged the number of spots the district hopes to open to students this year: around 220 applications have been submitted for about 1,300 spots, according to figures district spokesperson Karen Corona provided Tuesday.  The program is planned to serve students in pre-kindergarten through seventh grade. Locations will be held at the following locations: Central Park, Mont Pleasant and Oneida middle schools; Howe Elementary, also serving students from Yates and Zoller; Van Corlaer Elementary, also serving students from Hamilton and Pleasant Valley; Paige Elementary, also serving students from Lincoln and Keane; Woodlawn Elementary, also serving students from Martin Luther King Jr.
