Czechs to Exclude Russia From $7Bln Nuclear Tender

Czechs to Exclude Russia From $7Bln Nuclear Tender April 19, 2021 Rosatom’s anticipated rejection from the Dukovany bidding reflects a geopolitical shift for one of Russia’s closest allies in the European Union and NATO. Zuma / TASS Czech officials said Sunday they plan to exclude Russia’s nuclear monopoly Rosatom from taking part in a $7 billion tender to replace the central European nation’s aging power plant after Prague took action against Moscow over a deadly 2014 blast. Over the weekend, the Czech Republic expelled 18 Russian diplomats and accused the two Skripal poisoning suspects of involvement in the military ammunition blast that killed two people. Russia, which kicked out 20 Czech diplomats in retaliation, dismissed the allegations as “made-up pretexts” and criticized Prague of bowing to pressure from the United States.

Rosatom set to be barred from Czech nuclear power plant tender

Rosatom set to be barred from Czech nuclear power plant tender April 19, 2021 Revelations that Russian intelligence was behind a 2014 blast in Czechia could see nuclear energy giant Rosatom lose out on a lucrative deal to upgrade the Dukovany nuclear power plant. Czech officials will exclude Russia’s nuclear monopoly Rosatom from taking part in a tender worth several billion euros to upgrade its nuclear power plant at Dukovany following revelations that Russia was behind a deadly 2014 blast at an arms depot. Czechia revealed on April 17 that two Russian men, also suspected of carrying out the 2018 Salisbury poisonings against the former Russian intelligence operative Sergei Skripal, are being linked to the explosion at an arms depot, in which two people were killed.

Deputy PM: Rosatom to be excluded from key Czech nuclear tender

Czech deputy PM and industry and trade minister Karel Havlíček says that in the coming days the Russian company Rosatom will be excluded from a list of companies bidding to build a nuclear unit at the Czech Dukovany plant. Mr. Havlíček made the comment on Czech Television on Sunday, a day after the Prague government’s decision to expel 18 Russian diplomats over Moscow’s involvement in a deadly explosion in Moravia in 2014. The minister had earlier said on CNN Prima at that it was very unlikely to virtually out of the question that Rosatom would be allowed to take part in the tender process for Dukovany, which is regarded as one of the country’s key strategic investments.

The Green Brief: Europe s anti-nuclear madness – EURACTIV com

Greetings and welcome to EURACTIV’s Green Brief. Below you’ll find the latest roundup of news covering energy & environment from across Europe. You can subscribe to the weekly newsletter here. The European Commission’s in-house scientific body, the Joint Research Centre, released its much-awaited report on nuclear power on Friday 2 April, just before the Easter break. Its conclusions were clear: nuclear power is a safe, low-carbon energy source comparable to wind and hydropower, and as such, it qualifies for a green investment label under the EU’s green finance taxonomy. All clear for a nuclear renaissance in Europe, then? No. First, the fundamental issues with nuclear remain. Europe’s ageing fleet of nuclear plants needs to be replaced, but with renewables now clearly winning the race for the cheapest kilowatt-hour on the market, governments are reasonably turning to wind and solar as a more affordable source of low-carbon electricity.
