Pro-Kannada activists went on a rampage in Belagavi and tore down boards of shops written in Marathi on Friday.
Groups of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike led by Deepak Gudenatti and other leaders raided shops in Kakati Road and Khade Bazar in the old city. While some tried to blacken Marathi boards, others removed them by tearing and kicking them. Activists climbed poles to remove Marathi posters and banners.
Activists also allegedly tried to attack Prakash Shirolkar, Shiv Sena district president. They stopped his car near Bogarves and removed the number plate. Police rushed to the spot and dispersed them.
‘We’ve suffered owing to reduced demand in the wake of the lockdown’
Weavers associations have demanded relief from the government for individual weavers who they say have suffered due to reduced demand in the wake of the COVID-19-induced lockdown and a sudden rise in input prices.
The lockdown reduced their business to near zero, due to the restriction on movement of workers and the ban on events such as marriages.
Demand did not pick up after the restrictions were eased to earlier levels.
Now, in 2021, prices of yarn and other raw material have gone up by 50-60 per cent, they say.

Bengaluru: Reacting to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackerayâs claim over Belagavi, Karnataka has sought to appropriate Mumbai; till Mumbai is made a part of Karnataka, the state wants Maharashtraâs capital to be declared a Union Territory.
In a sharp reaction to Thackerayâs statement made on Wednesday, Karnataka Deputy CM Laxman Savadi said: âBelgaum is ours. We condemn the statement of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The Mahajan Committee report is final. We, the people of Mumbai-Karnataka region, have a right over Mumbai city. We now demand that Mumbai should be made a part of Karnataka and till the Union Government takes a decision on this, Mumbai should be declared a Union Territory.â

Amid high drama, the police failed to remove a pole with Kannada flag that was erected by Kannada activists without due clearance from the government in front of the city corporation building in Belagavi on Monday.
Efforts by the police to remove the pole failed with the activists offering resistance. The police took some activists into custody but another group arrived on the spot and continued a dharna. They were demanding that district in-charge Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi come to the spot and unfurl the flag on Tuesday morning.
