‘We’ve suffered owing to reduced demand in the wake of the lockdown’
Weavers associations have demanded relief from the government for individual weavers who they say have suffered due to reduced demand in the wake of the COVID-19-induced lockdown and a sudden rise in input prices.
The lockdown reduced their business to near zero, due to the restriction on movement of workers and the ban on events such as marriages.
Demand did not pick up after the restrictions were eased to earlier levels.
Now, in 2021, prices of yarn and other raw material have gone up by 50-60 per cent, they say.

Attempts by the district administration to convince Kannada activists to remove the Kannada flag that they had put up without permission in front of the Belagavi City Corporation failed in Belagavi on Tuesday.
Officers of the police and other departments tried to speak to leaders of Kannada groups and asked them to put up the flag post and a flag after obtaining due permission. Activists argued that the government could issue permits with retrospective effect.
A meeting of Deputy Commissioner M.G. Hiremath with activists in his office failed to convince them. They countered the argument of officers that the government should treat the flag issue just as it had handled the Sangolli Rayanna and Shivaji Circle issue in Peeranwadi and accord them post-facto permits.

Amid high drama, the police failed to remove a pole with Kannada flag that was erected by Kannada activists without due clearance from the government in front of the city corporation building in Belagavi on Monday.
Efforts by the police to remove the pole failed with the activists offering resistance. The police took some activists into custody but another group arrived on the spot and continued a dharna. They were demanding that district in-charge Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi come to the spot and unfurl the flag on Tuesday morning.
