More than 1,000 people in Japan spent Thursday night stuck on a highway in their cars, waiting out a traffic jam with little food or water during a heavy snowstorm.
More than 1,000 drivers have been stuck in a 40-hour traffic jam after a highway was hit by record snowfall in Japan.
Queues on the Kanetsu Expressway between Tokyo and Niigata first began on Wednesday but drivers continue to wait on the road today.
The road s entrance was closed yesterday morning but drivers already on the highway were forced to sleep in their cars and lorries buried in the snow with little food or water.
Traffic began after a car got stuck in snow in the middle of the road, Japan s highway operator NEXCO reported.

Hundreds of vehicles that had remained stranded on a long stretch of expressway north of Tokyo due to heavy snow were cleared by late Friday, according to the road s operator, as efforts continued to rescue drivers two days after the congestion first formed.
Snowplows were deployed on hard-hit sections of the Kanetsu Expressway, which connects Tokyo and Niigata Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast. Members of the Ground Self-Defense Force and others shoveled snow accumulated on the road, where as many as 2,100 vehicles had been stranded.
