This 15-km Japanese traffic jam had some trapped for 40 hours

SHARE STORY Snow-covered vehicles are jammed on a road in Tokyo on February 15, 2014 as traffic is disrupted after a heavy snowfall.  Yoshikazu Tsuno / Getty A traffic jam that began as heavy snow fell outside Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday still had some drivers and passengers trapped in their vehicles over 40 hours later.  The backup (not pictured above) stretched 15 km along the Kanetsu Expressway, which runs between Tokyo and Niigata prefectures, at its longest point on Thursday night, according to Japan’s highway authority, the Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO). By Thursday morning, after some drivers had been stranded overnight, NEXCO closed the roadway to prevent further congestion. Bits of traffic were able to inch along, but others were completely stuck. Images of the jam show a long line of immobile, snow-piled cars curving through flat white fields.
