The koi carp is the first seen in the 50,000-year-old lake - New Zealand s biggest dune lake and among the best examples of its type in the world. At first I thought it was a ginormous goldfish, Voschezang from Hamilton, said of the 40-centimetre-long, bright orange fish he spotted in the lake north of Dargaville.
Dune lakes are among the rarest and most threatened aquatic habitats in the world.

Two long weekends are expecting to bring boaties back to the water and harbourmasters are warning people to follow safety and courtesy rules.
The weather outlook for this long weekend is looking promising for boating. Apart from possible early showers tomorrow, particularly for Whangārei, which are clearing in the afternoon, the rest of the weekend is fine. There will be a slightly cooler southwesterly wind today, and a light easterly flow tomorrow and Sunday reduces to light breezes Monday.

Nelson-based Pic’s Peanut Butter in association with the Ministry for Primary Industries will trial crops in three locations - Ruawai on a kūmara farm, Pouto Peninsula near Dargaville, and on Māori land in the Kai Iwi Lakes district.
Declan Graham from Plant & Food Research, which is managing the project trials, says trial peanuts were planted in late October and are expected to be ready for harvest within 16 to 20 weeks.
Pic Picot, Picot Productions owner and founder, says the trials have the potential to make a real difference to the company s carbon footprint and redirect the millions of dollars it spends on imported nuts to Northland.
