Former Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt General Tukur Buratai, retd, said yesterday in a tribute that the late Ibrahim Attahiru, his successor, was on the verge of making the country proud in the fight against insurgency when he died.
Attahiru and 10 military officers lost their lives in an air crash near Kaduna International Airport on Friday.
Attahiru and 10 other military officers were on board a military aircraft that crashed in Kaduna State on Friday, May 21, 2021. All the victims were buried at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja, on Saturday, May 22, but President Buhari skipped the ceremony despite only being minutes away, a decision that drew public criticism. The president described the late Attahiru as an outstanding soldier and an institution builder when he spoke on the phone to his wife on Sunday, May 23. He hailed the sacrifices of the deceased military men and the Armed Forces in general, noting that Nigerians will continue to appreciate and support their efforts.
The grieving lady, in her tribute said Femi was the kindest and most humble person she has ever known. According to her, he proposed to her last August.

The president had asked Bashir Magashi, defence minister, to represent him at the funeral which took place at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja but this did not sit well with some Nigerians as they took to Twitter to show their disappointment.
“This funeral of former Chief of Army staff held in Abuja, Buhari and his VP Osinbajo were absent. The most irresponsible govt in the history of this country,” Somto Onuchukwu tweeted.
